List their age and position! LOL

Listen, no matter how u spin it, you bought Ortiz in the third round. Regardless, your overspending killed more than half your team. Zero chance this team cashes. Sorry, but I don't sugarcoat

Ortiz and Votto. I will pay $2 more any day of the week for Votto. Since Ortiz can only play util and getting older and Votto is entering his prime are couple reasons why. Also if someone was willing to spend a pretty penny on Billy Hamilton means they believe that he will wreck havoc on the base paths hence opening up holes for Votto and maybe an extra few mistakes by leaving a fastball over the plate.

Stars and scrubs baby, stars and scrubs. You don't get an All-Star team in an auction.

Tell me how many industry auction leagues have been won by owners who refuse to spend over $25 on any player and has a roster full of "average" players?

We're all waiting for the other shoe to drop as well. That shoe being the 27 man bench. We address our weaknesses there. Remember, no FAAB to bail you out mid season.

Do you think your team will cash?
There is a certain owner, who shall remain nameless, unless he voluntarily comes forward, who is, in my opinion the best auction player in the business and has proven it with overall auction championships and ultimate auction championships, who drafts only average and above average players, no stars and no scrubs. Everyone has their own approach and the auction brings out so many different strategies since you can basically buy whoever you want. I am also a star and scrub guy, but once again you are making statements that are misguided and incorrect.

Time will tell, Alan. I was hoping to face you in an auction but will be away for the $250 next week. Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your stars and scrubs listed in the Affordable Auctions thread.

Ortiz went for $24 and Votto for $26? Personally, next Saturday night, I won't bid on Ortiz at all; I am not a stars and scrubs player either; did the Auction go well last night? No issues? Votto a HUGE bargain compared to what Ortiz cost

Other than taking longer than expected - yes. There are some notes above that should help us shave an hour off the time.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I know a guy who has won auction titles without spending over $19 on any player! :D :D :D

And thank you for the kind words Alan. You are the defending champ though so you are quite successful in your own right!

Not saying it doesn't happen or can't happen. More champions seem to use stars 'n scrubs so I took issue with Gekko saying half my team was crap. Yeah, the scrubs half. Duh.

3 of your pitchers I wouldn't even take in the 30th round of a DC. That is below scrub!

Maybe in your crowd (which is fine) - the perception, however, is a myopic generalization.

This is a much more disciplined approach and more sensible when you think about it. Some of those average or above average players are going to have career years so you grow your own stars. Much more unlikely for a scrub to suddenly have a great season. I think some people go in wanting to draft a lot of mid priced players, but auction fever winds up steering them into a stars and scubs roster.

I think both styles (stars and scrubs and mid-value) can work, they just have to be executed properly. It all comes down to acquiring the most total discounts that you can. If by your own valuations, you don't come out of the auction with $290 or $300 total value, you're probably unlikely to cash.

The key is remaining disciplined and not paying full price on any player (let alone overspending).

If I can purchase a bunch of stars at $2 or $3 discounts over my valuations, awesome. If the values wind up with the mid-range players instead, perfect.

In the example listed, I think Votto was purchased at a $1 discount, which is perfectly fine, though in a perfect world I'm looking for more. Ortiz, I think was purchased at a $1 premium according to my valuations. I'm sure Deadheadz has a higher valuation on him though, so it's all relative. The problem (in my estimation) is that if he had him valued at $24 and purchased him at $24, it's hard to win that way.

YES.

This question is like asking Gekko if his name is Mark. You're always going to get the same answer regardless of league, and often times, the answer is correct at the end of the year.

Pitcher A $4 / Round 17
Pitcher B $5 / Round 20

Value?
Maybe I missed the rules of the auction. Were we bidding on what happened last season or what we expect might occur in the upcoming campaign?

My mistake Todd.

Please, go over the "rules of the auction" for us. Please.

Do they include NOT discussing/debating players and what their potential performance could be in 2014 relative to 2013?

Half the fun of fantasy sports is the debate but you just like the chance to pile on, don't you?

Go ahead, take the fun out of jt.
Be boring.

I give up on you people.

Not for nothing, but in my boring manner, that's exactly the point I was trying to make. Except let's not pretend your comparison was not a shot at what you perceive to be a bad buy as much as it is a talking point, much like your initial comparison was to suggest one was a good pick and not simply a vehicle to innocuously discuss a couple of players.

Another set of blind 2013 resumes:

Pitcher A 201IP 19QS 198K 3.97ERA 1.31WHIP
Pitcher B 213IP 19QS 214K 4.33ERA 1.34WHIP
Pitcher C 218IP 22QS 217K 3.46ERA 1.31WHIP

Pitcher A $2 / ADP Rd 16
Pitcher B $9 / ADP Rd 12
Pitcher C $21 / ADP Rd 4

Neither of these pitchers are on my roster. I have no axe to grind or finger to point.
Simply want to discuss value vs hype.

Not sure what kind of argument you trying to start while only stating half the facts. Not sure many people here draft this years team based solely on half the facts from last year, most good players draft on expectations for this year. If your looking for an evaluation on how these guys did last year you need to include the win totals. lets say your taking about verlander or lester or cj Wilson or lance Lynn or even Ubaldo Jimenez, each of these players are being drafted on everyone's combined expectations for this year and not last year so I think your exercise is basicly useless.

Hopefully you will end up in some of my leagues as I like to be in leagues with a few guys that are dead money.
