Jason Heyward = Adam Dunn

Post by knuckleheads » Thu Apr 17, 2014 7:26 am

I made the above post on a thread earlier this year and it was wrong and insulting, and I apologize to Adam Dunn.

Jason Heyward < Adam Dunn. Ship it.

Yup...the golden sombrero last night was tough to watch.

Still, if dropped, I would bid.... :?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

He is certainly unpredictable from year to year. He had that great rookie season, showing plate discipline of a far advanced player. His sophomore year, he had a shoulder issue and he spent the entire season weakly grounding out to second base. His third season, his walk rate dropped and his strikeout rate soared, but he seemed to be consolidating his skills with career highs in HR (27) and SB (21). Last season, he got off to just as brutal a start as this year, but it lasted longer and then he got hurt. He finally busted out when they moved him to leadoff and he quickly got injured again. I'm sure he'll turn things around at some point this year, but he is definitely frustrating to own.

He is clearly miscast as a leadoff hitter. Oh, so is BJ at #2

The Braves first two hitters combined are hitting .330. (Phrasing of previous sentence may be misleading).

I know it's early in the season, but Greg Walker has to be on the hot seat in Atlanta.

Brave fans must be getting restless by now.

Edit: after watching Fredi manage the game today, he needs to go too. Braves should have won the game today.

Perhaps Jason Heyward never had the "advanced plate discipline" that was propagated when he was 20. Perhaps he just doesn't know what's a strike, and errors on the side of not swinging. And now pitchers are just throwing him more strikes. Career walk totals:

91
51
58
48

Heyward's approach has changed, but not for the better. He is more aggressive now, which is shown in that he's swinging at and missing more inside pitches off the plate. It seems like he's just very slow to make adjustments. He's only a career .227 hitter against LHP and just 1-19 against lefties so far this year.

He's facing Jon Niese today for the first time since he got his jaw broken by a Niese fastball last August. It would probably help his confidence a lot if he has some good at-bats today.

So much dislike for BJ on these boards.

Last 7 days: 5 walks, 4Ks. Avg up from .135 to .210. 1 HR, 3 SBs.
He should not be hitting 2nd.
But anyone who drafted him in the 14th-15th round this year has got to like what's he's done here lately.
