Byrnes has been a 5-category guy the last three months, I find this a very odd drop. Ecspecially, with the #2 overall team also in that league and potentially in need of another outfielder or utility guy. This is definitely a situation that is worthy of watching. Eric Byrnes has been a fantasy stud, but is not a NAME guy. Just thought it deserved a mention...

We certainly understand why some owners need to cut closers and of course every cut will be allowed. However, we have taken Chad Cordero out of Chicago League 2's free agent pool as having a closer in that league at this point in the season could be an unfair advantage. Owners in Chicago League 2 won't see Chad Cordero in their free agent pool this season.

Fair enough, Greg. Considering his roster, I thought it was a strange cut and not the one I would have made. So I just wanted to bring it to the forefront, if for nothing else, so that any of the 14 other owners in NY2 that peruse these boards see it.

I think the most interesting dump this week was Rich Hill. Not that I think he should be taken out of the pool by any means, but how is it possible that he was worth rostering when he had an ERA up over 7, but not now? Was it the 2 wins or the 15 K's or the 2.40 ERA or the 0.93 WHIP that made you get rid of him? It must be that crappy satisfied feeling you get when a player finally does what you were hoping he could do all along. Gotta hate that.

Or maybe it's just what happens when people plan next week's roster moves on Monday morning.

Eric Byrnes picked up by the bluebloods...nice p-up! Nice to have a 5-category presence of a guy like that available for a contending team in need of another bat.

Curiously, Byrnes is not as great a pickup for the bluebloods as it might seem, especially within NY2 itself. The bluebloods have substantial leads in both HR and SB, so Byrnes' two best skills don't really help much. Overall, Byrnes extra SB's will get the bluebloods 8 extra points, maximum, and 2.5 extra points for homeruns, again maximum. Byrnes is decent in runs, but nothing special at all in rbis. An optimistic estimate for extra overall points in runs scored would be +10-15. Batting average is not really a strong point for Byrnes and that is where the bluebloods could use the most help on offense ... .2764 team average. Byrnes won't hurt the bluebloods, but I don't think he'll help much either. Byrnes would have been a better fit on my team, but I didn't have the money left to make a strong bid for him.

I'm starting to question why it's even worth saving your FAAB down the stretch if and when Teams predictably start making HUGE strategy changes, yet these players get taken out of the pool. I mean the fact is, if someone has too many closers and knows there is no longer that need, then what happens happens in the FAAB. I feel like we have gone from 1st and 2nd round types being removed to simply certain position or statistical types being removed as well. I mean perhaps a leading team in one league is 22nd overall because someone is hoarding a category or something. Why shouldn't he be allowed to grab that player and get back into the overall mix?! I mean every other league gets that player's stats. Who cares if that manager was smart or fortunate enough to leave some nice cash around for August and September. That's just one strategic fascit of this game, but I now question its value.

I think as long as collusion can be ruled out, then the player should remain. Pure and simple. I mean unfortunately luck is part of this game. That includes the league your in, the draft itself, player injuries, and even the highs and lows of the FAAB.

Any team would like to have the opportunity, this late, to p-up a guy like Byrnes. I may be the president of the Eric Byrnes fan club, I guess that's what happens when your 30th round selection pans out. And maybe after his .130 batting average last week, we have seen the best of EB. But when I saw him dropped, I was surprised. But like I said, a good break for the bluebloods. However the team that cut Byrnes, could have cut Chris Burke or Brad Wilkerson. Two guys that he ended up cutting this week, and picking up Gabe Gross and Chris Duffy. Besides Burke and Wilkerson there were a handfull of other guys I would have considered before Byrnes. In any event, it was a peculilar cut, that was furthered by bluebloods coincidently picking him up. I'm guessing, it must have been clubhouse politics.

Some of us are unfortunate enough to be in leagues where everyone has the time and energy to know what is going on by the minute in the majors. Some leagues don't have that, thus better opportunties come along some times. There's no way around that side of luck.

The difference between the best league in this contest and the worst in minute. You have at least 5-7 great fantasy players in each league in this contest that alone is enough to keep the balance.

I wholeheartedly disagree. I think the majority of them have very small differences, but Leagues #1-4 will be siginificantly different than League #19-22. Even having 1 to 3 managers with different experience, knowledge, and/or time, as compared to another league will make a difference. In a nutshell, the more competitive your league, the less likely you have in winning the overall.

Add up each of the leagues cumulative stats, rank them 1-22, sum them,and let me know who the best 5 leagues are. I'd argue that only one of those leaders are in the top 5 Overall: if that.I did this for 2005, so give 2006 a shot.

(This method is obviosuly different to the competitions home page's method.)

I have now played in 5 NFBC format leagues and there is little to no difference in who gets dropped. Even if there was a couple of guys marginally dropped not one team will get a monopoly on the pick up.

Look I am sure you are a nice enough guy I know you seem so on these boards so I mean this as nice as possible. You have these elaborate ways of evaluating drafts, leagues, concerns about where and when to use FAAB, who should be taken out of a pool etc.

I would be more concerned that you did not find one player in rounds 16-30 that has provided much help to your team ( you could argue Anthony Reyes but round 21??).

Some of the best players I have played against in this Stevieland, Slacker Brothers, Dan Kenyon aka doughboys, Eric Peden, Shawn Childs etc are not good at this because they have a better FAAB strategy, a sophisticated way of predicting player points or get in better leagues. They do not miss early in drafts, they compliment their teams in the middle of drafts, and find great value late in drafts. Then they are honest about where they are weak and they aggressively address it in FAAB. You can tweak your numbers all day long but in the end you can either evaluate players or you cannot.

I'll just use a piece of anecdotal evidence to support why: Ronny Paulino, who is arguably an outstanding faab if not all-around catcher has only accumulated two weeks of stats in my league. Based on his 91.7% start rate (which has been consistent) it looks like one of only two leagues he isn't used in. Why? Because I have him as well as McCann and Mauer who are ahead of him. I am not going to drop him, but I can't see how that makes my league worse, though the league's stats are hurt because plenty of teams are forced to play Navarro types.

Plenty of good players don't accumulate stats in leagues but that hardly seems demonstrative of the level of quality in a league.

I simply stated my point and backed it up with the thread I did for the 2005 season's results.

And I am not talking about any one particular element of this competition (ie the draft). There are a lot of parts involved in winning this competition and if you really think EVERY league is pretty equal in their overall ability, then you are one nieve little pup.

Bad Drafts leave gaping holes, bad projections leave holes, bad punts in FAAB leave bigger holes, lack of patience leaves new holes: the list goes on and on as the skill set (AND LUCK) involved with competing with the best proves crucial. If there are several of these guys in one league, the few pros in that league will eat them up. It's that simple.

So go back to wasting your time on evaluating my draft, because it has nothing to do with the post I made on this thread.

Your league may not be as competitive as others because if it were then someone would have laid out the money to get him over you. I am sure someone need him much more than you but didn't have the guts, money, or know with all to finally bail on Y.Molina. So essentially a perfectly competitive league would be one where all 14 batters and 9 pitchers for each team were the top 345 statistical players. My argument isn't that the Paulino's of the world shouldn't happen (and that all 345 players should be spread equally) as that is impossible: my point is that the frequency of those happenings should be smaller in the more competitive leagues thus greater statistics overall. I.E. There should be less opportunties for the better managers to corner the market in categories or positions. Obviously one manager couldn't do this, but a few could...I think it's called an oligopoly.

However, to help support your point a little bit, Paulino would be the type of player that gets overlooked because either most of us new little about him or the logjam on his team at the time scared off most. These kind of guys slip through regardless of what league consistency is. Those who could take a punt on him as a 3rd catcher were the fortunate ones. I'd guess he was initally picked up as insurance for Mauer (knee) on your team.

My theory tends to flip Greg's method upside down (reason being if your league's stats are spreader flatter and broader acroos all managers then the more significant your loss in cumulative Overall points, per manager, with his method: your league may still have the better cumulative stats). I'd argue that our two leages would probably be in the top 5 in regards to toughness of competition. That's a guess-estimate.

I mean NY3 is an absolute **** fight right now and its very hard to gain an upper hand anywhere.

The funny thing is--and it supports your point a bit--I was bidding like $50 to get him and then they said McCann wouldn't go on the DL so I still wanted some insurance, but I lowered my bid to $22, thinking I'd never get him. Well, I did and it was damn lucky since McCann really did go on the DL.

It's amazing how consistent Paulino has been in BA at least--I'd have to consider using him at utility some weeks if I didn't have Frank Thomas.

For the record, I'll say that my league is competitive (there are like 7 4th place or better team's from last year) and there are plenty of good players on other team's benches. I think league stats work out better when luck helps the right pegs fall into the right holes.

That said, there are differences between leagues but I don't know that you can quantify it this way and you certainly can't quantify it by years of experience in the NFBC (there are plenty of other leagues out there as you may have noticed).

Yeah, I got Paulino on a trial basis as I tried to figure out whether Showalter would give Laird some extra time. I lost patience and decided to just run with it.

One of the lamest things I've ever seen is how leagues are ranked on cumulative stats.

Just because the players are spread out more evenly in a league doesn't mean it's a better league.

There are teams in most leagues that are quite possibly hording on their bench one cat or another, and that takes away from the league ranking, but does not make it a bad league.

If your stats are in the middle of the comp is there a more likley chance that you have to share those points with others (ie bunching)? The answer is "yes", as too is you ability to move up in points. So if hypothetically all the guys in one league were in that middle range (ie 55 percentile) then they will not have the most cumulative points in Greg's method even though they could arguably have the most cumulative stats. Now explain to me again why this method is lame?! :rolleyes:
