2015 NFBC Early Draft Results

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri Nov 21, 2014 10:18 am

We already have three Draft Champions Leagues competing right now as the 2015 NFBC season is well underway. The grand prize in the NFBC Draft Champions Leagues this year is $25,000 as we expect another record season for that contest. The best way to whet your appetites for these leagues is to show early draft results, so that's what we'll do here.

We won't show any team names for any of these drafts, but from here through the end of March we'll post draft results of our online leagues. We'll only show the first 6 rounds, but once you sign up for a 2015 NFBC team you'll have access to the Average Draft Position lists. Those will start generating results once we have at least five finished leagues in any of the contests. Enjoy the ADPs because they are a good road map to get your draft planning started.

Have to say I like the variability of these early contests before folks start getting influenced - or overly influenced - by ADP. For instance, looking at the two draft results posted so far, I see Todd Frazier comes off the board at 2.8 (23rd) in one draft and 4.14 (59th) in another. Not saying one's right or wrong; I just find the differences interesting.

Agreed. Drafters are actually taking guys they want instead of what ADP tells them. Imagine that.

FYI: 82 ballplayers were picked in all three drafts, 5 in just two, and 14 in just one.

Dustin Pedroia went 70th, 83rd, and not in the sixth round. Guess those reports about how good he was feeling didn't reasonate.

David Wright picked in the sixth round of two, not picked in the first six rounds of the other. The mighty have truly fallen.

Charlie Blackmon was picked 36th, 87th, 52nd. Mr. Consistency.

Nelson Cruz went 18, 20, and 62. That's what a report saying the Mariners are even THINKING about you will do for your rep.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Thoughts?
Well, I notice that the owner in the 15-hole went SP, SP, SP, SP, SP, and SP. I'd be curious to know if that type of strategy ever won an NFBC league. Can't see it myself (at all), but it would be interesting to know how this team did at the end of the year (and what it tried to do to compete in the other six categories).

Mike
Chris King won an NFBC main event title this past year and he started his draft with 9 straight SPs. So it definitely can be done.

Wow! Nine straight SPs and he won a Main Event league? Incredible. Gutsy, too, putting up that type of cash with such an extreme drafting strategy. The rest of his draft and/or FAAB purchases must have been stellar. I wouldn't have thought it could be done; shows how much I know.

I do hate the punting strategies. The all pitching team punting hr's and rbi going only for R's, sb's, and ba. I understand why they do it and acknowledge their right to do so. It just aggravates me and seems to circumvent the spirit of the contest. JMHO.

Are you saying the spirit of the contest is that everyone use the same strategy and let luck and, to a lesser extent, research be the deciding factors?

My view is that we must all be paying enough attention during the draft to be able to see such a strategy developing and adjust accordingly so as to not be defenseless against it.

Seems like without varying strategies we could all just auto draft.

I agree 100 percent. If deadheadz or anyone wants to throw away money on some stupid strategy then why do we need to make rules against this. By making him and the whole league conform to a certain way of drafting turns it into more of a luck fest and hurts the more skillful players. If you just want to get lucky stop playing fantasy baseball and go to football only. THe rules we have put in place already have made it too cookie cutter and taken away from the skill .

I guess we would need to just let the fucking computer pick everyone's team off some pre ranked list to make some of the sore losers happy.

How many of these punting categories teams actually win? Some of course, but I would bet a "traditional" way of building a team has a better chance of winning the league.

As I stated I'm for trying to make the best team using all catagories as I believe the game was intended in the first place. I've played against many punting players and as I said they are intitled to employ any strategy with in the rules. It's pretty easy to spot this stuff real early and you can adjust accordingly when necessary. My personal opinion is I don't care for it. Others disagree, ok. Sorry I started this off course argument on this thread. I just noticed team 15, as has become usual, going in this direction. Oddly, and I have been in leagues like this, more than 1 team are trying the same strategy screwing each other. That I kind of enjoy. BTW my lists never look like the pat ones that others may use. If you are using these no wonder you need to try something else. That's all I will say on the matter. I'd like to try to hand this thread back to it's intended purpose and not venture into any side tracks. Draft as bizarre as you want. It's a free country. Let me know when 1 of these wins the $125,000. Those guys all seem to be picking the usual guys as you seem to think. Funny how somebody like Jupincka or Hinkleman or Morgan seems to get "lucky" year after year.

So who will it be...who will be the one (probably the first and last) NOT to take Mike Trout first this year?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

It's been quite some time since I saw Miggy go at 1.8 or below. That seems like a risk worth taking!

I grabbed Donaldson at 2.10 in a recent draft and wondered if I was reaching, but I like player, I like the move to Toronto, and I really don't like the 3B pool in general this year. But, 1.11? Seems a bit too rich for my blood. We'll see.

I just took some time to look at our first 9 NFBC drafts and tweeted out these facts:

** Clayton Kershaw has been a Top 5 pick in each of our first 10 @thenfbc drafts this year. He was picked 2nd (2 times), 3rd, 4th and 5th (6).

** Dee Gordon's ADP in @thenfbc before his trade to Marlins was 39, going as high as 24 and as low as 49. Should be fun to watch his value now.

** Billy Hamilton has gone after Dee Gordon in 8 of our first 9 @thenfbc drafts, usually about 7 picks after Dee. Hamilton's ADP is 46.

** Despite hitting just .273-13-32 with 2 SBs last year, NFBC owners still love Bryce Harper. His ADP is 33 ranging from pick 20 to 43.

** Matt Harvey should be back on Opening Day and could be a fantasy bargain. His ADP in @thenfbc is 67 with low of 46 and a high of 84.

** Head scratcher: Jose Fernandez won't be back until after the All-Star break, yet NFBC owners are taking him in the Top 200. ADP is 210.

** Two first basemen who have dropped 3-4 rounds since last year are Prince Fielder and Joey Votto. Both now in the 60-75 range in @thenfbc. Fielder's ADP last year was 14 and this year it's 66. Votto's ADP last year was 18 and now it's 76. Bargains or busts? Your call.
