"Nick Markakis is leaning toward having surgery to repair a bulging disk in his neck.
Recovery time is expected to be around 12 weeks. The Braves knew of the condition before agreeing to a four-year, $44 million contract with Markakis this week, but this news provides more context on why the Orioles ultimately backed away from the long-time fan favorite."
They overpaid for a healthy Markakis, but they KNEW he was going to have neck surgery and they STILL ponied up $11m a year for him for a guy with declining power and speed? One wonders what the multiplier would have been if he was planning other surgeries? I can only imagine the conversation...
"So it is settled, if you ampute you thumbs, we will pay you $11.5m per year, neck surgery $11.0m, sex change $12.5m. No knife and we will only pay $7.5m per year. We agreed?"
