:geek:

What I noticed right away about the first roster were two names of players having career type seasons when there was no expectation of such high production:

VMart
Dee Gordon

Before I looked at the second roster I silently bet myself it would also have one or both of these players. Wrong! I was surprised too that the lotto windfall of Nelson Cruz didn't show up on either roster, so it obviously wasn't all about luck.

What I did notice was Twins catcher/DH Josmil Pinto on both winning teams.

I think I figured it out! ;)

Chad Schroeder has been one of the very best players in NFBC history since he first joined in 2009 and he won another league title last year and finished 3rd overall. I'm not sure if he will be returning in 2015 or not, but we sure hope so because he has really excelled at this format. He won this league title with 130 points and was in line for the $125,000 grand prize most of the year. Here's a look at his draft from the 8th spot and waiver pickups:

Chas Nelson of West Allis, Wisconsin had competed in the Chicago Auction League in 2011 and 2012, but a growing family prevented him from travelling for the NFBC in 2014. So instead he entered the NFBC Main Event for the first time and did that draft online on Wednesday, March 26th with a buddy. We had 5 different Online leagues for that mid-week Main Event and during his first entry into the Main Event he won League 5 with 125 points. Our first three finishers in the overall drafted from the 1, 6 and 8 spots and Chas also drafted from the 6th spot, but his first pick didn't perform as expected. Here's a look at his winning roster, which finished 4th overall. Great job Chas:

NFBC veteran Neal Moses had the 5th pick in last year's Second Weekend Las Vegas Main Event and took Clayton Kershaw. He finished the highest of anyone who took Kershaw, who was on a lot of winning teams last year. Appropriately, Neal finished 5th overall in the Main Event as he won Las Vegas League 1 in convincing fashion with 127 points.

One of the reasons I wanted to show these league championship teams was because it shows that you can win a league title many different ways. In Neal's case, he took the first SP, the first RP and he added an injured closer in the 10th round who could have been the No. 2 closer on Draft Day. He took Billy Hamilton in the third round when his ADP was around 75. Lots of good gambles here that paid off, and very unlike our top 4 teams. Interesting. Here's a look at Neal's championship draft:

Success in fantasy baseball typically comes down to two factors: how you do in your draft/auction (primarily a "skill" skillset) and the performance of the players you've taken (more luck). Yes, trades and free agents factor into this but by-and-large it's those two factors. Based on my time in the NFBC I'd summarize as follows:

Draft well, lucky performance: you win the overall easily
Draft well, average performance: you're in the running for the overall and win your league
Draft well, unlucky performance: likely out of the money
Draft average, lucky performance: you're in the running for the overall and win your league
Draft average, average performance: out of the money
Draft average, unlucky performance: out of the money
Draft poorly, lucky performance: you're in the money, maybe win the league but not close to the overall

Two weeks ago a fellow NFBC player and myself were going over our respective 2014 season.

I had my worst Main Event finish with a 13th place. I was trying to figure out exactly what went wrong and I mentioned to him that Michael, the 2nd place finisher in the ME, was drafting right next to me (6th & 7th). My friend asked if I remember Michael "stealing" any of my players right before my pick. I said, "no, I don't think he ever took a player I was targeting".
His response to me, "mystery solved"

Michael had a great season in 2014.......and this year I'm gonna look at his cheat sheet ;)

Since we've gone to split weekends and On-line options for the Main Event, how many of the ME Winners/Top 5 finishers have had multiple entries for that season??

I wonder if Greg or KJ may have that information.

I remember at the time there was a lot of message board debate about the impact of split-weekend drafting and allowing multiple entries. I'm just curious now if any pattern can be seen after several years worth of results.

The Main Event champs (Greg & Dale Morgan) drafted the first weekend. Michael Makula's second place team also drafted in Chicago the first weekend. If my math is correct it looks like four of the Top 10 finishers drafted the first weekend with six the second week.

Sure, it's a good question. We went to 2 weekends in 2010 and some of our champions have had multiple teams, but it's not why they are winning. They've had good teams and bad teams. And they aren't drafting as many 15-team leagues in the Draft Champions as some other owners. But here's the facts:

Of the Top 8 teams last year, Greg Morgan shared one Main Event with his dad (the overall championship team) and one with Perry Van Hook. So he had two Mains.

Michael Makula finished 2nd and drafted in Chicago with his lone team. Chad Schroeder finished 3rd overall and had 3 Mains. Chas Nelson joined the Main for the first time last year, drafted one team Online and finished 4th overall. Neal Moses had one Main and finished 5th overall.

John Lemke drafted one Main Event team, won a league title and finished 6th overall. He also competed in the Diamond and other high-dollar private leagues and cashed in most of the them. Steve Fiore had 1 Main Event team and 2 Primetimes and cashed in each of them, finishing 7th overall in the Main and 3rd overall in the Primetime. Lindy Hinkelman had 2 Mains, wins everywhere he goes and finished 8th overall.

In 2013, Ken Norred and Dan Semsel won the Main Event overall together, and they each took a separate Main Event team. In 2012, Dave Potts had two Main Event teams and won the overall with one of them. In 2011, Lindy HInkelman had 1 Main Event team and won the overall title, as he did in 2009.

None of these guys play as many 15-team Draft Champions Leagues as some owners do who also play in the Main Event. And honestly we're probably going to lose some good NFBC owners who used to take multiple Main Event teams after years of not winning consistently. It happens, both good and bad. But I don't see a pattern other than we need to keep adding alternative games if the 15-team format gets to be too much for some busy folks. It can happen.

What I've noticed this week is a good mix of returning NFBC veterans and new players. On Monday alone, we got three new Main Event entries from folks who started in Satellite Leagues or the Online Championship and are doing their first Mains. We need more of those and the Online Championship and hopefully the Cutline next year could be good feeder programs for that. But we definitely don't regret going to multiple weekends; the competition was already taking the Second Weekend when we should have moved there anyway. Now we have a better chance to get everyone in the NFBC and still host regional live drafts. I think it works and everyone still has a shot at the overall by winning their league title first.

It's been fun to look at some of last year's Main Event league champions, so let's keep it going with another look back. Phil Gurnee joined the NFBC for the first time last year and in his first-ever event with us he won a Main Event league title with 126 points and finished 6th overall. He wasn't afraid to take Clayton Kershaw with the third overall pick and he rode the Cy Young winner to an incredible season. Here's a look at Phil's team:

1 3 Kershaw, Clayton P MoustacheBall
3 3 Stanton, Giancarlo OF MoustacheBall
4 13 Kemp, Matt OF MoustacheBall

Two of the Top 6 finishers in last year's Main Event played that contest for the first time, which gives hope to everyone in that 15-team format. But we also had some good veterans finishing well and one of them was Steve Fiore, who had the best shot at the $75,000 bonus in 2014. Steve was in the Top 5 in the Main Event and the Primetime for much of last season and he finished 3rd overall in the Primetime and 7th overall in the Main Event. Steve is back this year in both events with the hope of challenging for both overalls once again.

Here's a look at Steve's Main Event draft that led to his 7th place finish and a league title with 129.5 points, drafting from Spot 11:

9 11 Soria, Joakim P Sultans of Smack
10 5 Butler, Billy DH Sultans of Smack

Greg,
Since we are in the draft champion "season" any chance we could see what the top few teams looked like in this format?

Thanks, Ryan

Did Steve have a hellacious run with useful FAAB buys? Overcoming Fielder, Rios and Parnell to finish top 10 ME is an amazing feat, but I see only Gordon as a hint to how it happened.

The combination of Dee and Gordon helped quite a bit.

Agreed, Steve had a lot to overcome after Draft Day. He compensated by getting Jake Arrieta in the first FAAB period, followed by K-Rod and Devin Mesoraco in April. As you can see, he NEVER stopped working it in FAAB:
