Robinson Cano

Post by ChipChopChip » Thu Feb 19, 2015 8:24 am

Cano is another guy that I just don't understand why he is being drafted around pick 22 overall. I understand that he is consistently on the field, but his stat line isn't that much better than Chase Utley's. I would not be surprised if Dustin Pedroia out produces Cano this year. What are people that are taking him in the second round thinking they are getting at this point in his career?

One word...consistency.

Cano has been a consistent performer (high BA, good to great counting stats except SB and who plays nearly every day) especially if you are a position-scarcity drafter. Pedroia used to be in the first two rounds and certainly Utley was, but that was before injury/age made them risker propositions. I have never drafted him in one of the NFBC leagues I have partcipated in, but I imagine it is nice to plug Cano in, let him rack up points, and take your gambles a little later in the draft.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Cano is not sexy by any means. The first and second rounds of drafts mean different things to different drafters.
Some think of it as their base.
Some want consistency with little chance of injury.
Some want a player that will outplay their first or second round designation.
Cano fills the bill on the first two of these theories.
He is the player that folks talk about when saying, "You can't win your draft with your first two picks, but you can lose it."

Cano is not sexy at all. Especially in Seattle. Some thought that Cano's homers would not be effected in Seattle because in the past, he had a good record of power on the road.
But, it has.
He is one of the few players taken in the first two rounds that we can't really expect either 20 homers or 20 stolen bases.
But, he'll score very high in the other three categories.
His numbers from last year do resemble Utleys. Although their numbers are similar, they are miles apart in trust....
or at least 12 rounds.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

I do think that .300+ hitters are becoming rare these days but Cano's new floor is just too low for my tastes. He is trending in the wrong direction to be a 2nd round pick for me.
