First we turned Mike into Giancarlo. It took awhile, but we all got used to it.

Today B.J. becomes Melvin Jr. Not sure this one will stick, as Upton's expiration date as a relevant fantasy player is fast approaching.

I started calling him Melvin last year. Maybe he got the memo that B.J. sucks.

After an off season of Ancestry.com, Upton added 2 vowels and 3 new consonants and comes into camp in the best name of his life

But could we soon witness the greatest baseball player ever named "Melvin"? Not "Mel", but "Melvin". Or "Melvin Emanuel"?

Melvin Mora is probably the best.

BJ Surhoff had good moments for that name.

RIP Mendoza ...

... introducing the new and improved, even lower, "Marvin Line".

I will have to go with Melvin Ott as the best Melvin.

Remember when Topps Americanized Roberto Clemente by putting the name 'Bob' on some of his cards?
They never called Marichal, 'John'. Or Rico Carty, 'Rick'.

Never mind, I'm the only one that old :D

So he goes from one of the coolest names to one of the least coolest names. huh. I always liked "Bossman Junior". Maybe his batting ability is inversely proportional to the appeal of his name.

If he can get his BA up over .240 or his OBA above .325, he can call himself "Towanda! Righter of Wrongs, Queen Beyond Compare!" for all I care. Until then, his name is not Melvin or BJ, just "Dead Meat"!

Yeah Dan he was Roberto in his 1955 and 1956 baseball cards and then he became Bob from 1957 to 1969 cards and then back to Roberto for his 1970-1973 cards. I guess there was some Americanizing going on there for a while. A lot of times I didn't realize some of the cards I had as a kid because I didn't know the players real name. I didn't realize the 1959 George Anderson baseball card was really "Sparky" Anderson.

Didn't we first meet through the baseball card industry? Damn, stop bringing me back to those days. I feel old now and that's not good before noon hour hoops.
