KDS

Post by ikenbaseball » Sun Mar 01, 2015 8:21 pm

I have a question for Main Event players.
Do you change rankings of your KDS or you go with the best position on the board?
I'm starting to think about the KDS for the main event and how I want to position myself in the draft and I'm not sure how I want to go.
I'm thinking that changing your position can be work in your favor early in your strategy but it can also be a curse in the draft when your target player gets chosen just a couple of picks before it's your turn further down in the draft.

Thanks and good luck to everyone.

I generally do not worry about my targeted players and when I think I can get them. To me, since after the first few rounds (certainly not more than the top 10), ADP's and other tools loose their usefulness regarding predictability. I go with where I am more comfortable drafting, taking a 30-round view.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Some people are uncomfortable picking on the ends, especially in 15 team drafts. In my draft champion league, I set my KDS 1-8 then 15-9. I prefer picking on the end in slow drafts primarily for the sake of convenience. If you pick 15th, you're only really on the clock 25 times instead of 50. ;)

I'm leaning towards just 1-15 and 1-12 with the rest of my KDS this year, but its a fun option and something else people can strategize about.

To be honest, if your entire opportunity for success is predicated at getting a certain player at a certain spot in the first round (or any round, for that matter), well, let's just say more preparation was necessary.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try for what you consider to be best-case scenario, it just means you should work through a couple of secondary pathways in case it doesn't come to fruition.

When you have the mindset that you don't care, just tell me when I pick -- then you're ready.

Todd, correct me if I'm wrong but judging by your answer, you don't adjust your KDS?
I think your first 4-5 picks do in a way dictate in which direction you're going to go with the rest of your picks.
I'm not saying a owner's success in that league hinges on those 4-5 picks but your choice of players picked in that particular draft might change depending on who you draft of course.

Most players would be happy take to Trout with the 1st pick in the draft.....but along with that pick later on comes 30,31,60, and 61. Even though you are happy that you drafted Trout...the potential players that might be available in those spots might not be as favorable as picking 15,16,45,46, 75,76.

i did say it's fine to go for what you think is optimal -- just be prepared in case it doesn't work.

I don't assume anyone will be available at any spot. I know some do, and have won doing so - but it's not my thing.

1. I don't trust an ADP as far as I can fold it into a paper airplane and throw it.
2. I care about how I feel the player will perform relative to the expectation of that draft spot. An ADP is a read on how the market feels -- not my problem.
3. There's a ton of players -- tons or permutations of talent. I want to put as much potential on my team early, then I'll balance it out later.

I usually set my ADP for as many players as I feel there is an early advantage then I tend to head to the wheel at the other end. I like to think about my players in pairs. I always have in mind what i want for my next two picks and try to figure out the order to choose to give me the beat chance at both -- that's easier near the wheel.
