Importance of 1B

I have a co-worker who also plays fantasy baseball (can't get him to join NFBC yet  ) but he swears by 1B. I have read several articles which also state the importance of having an All Star type 1B.

It seems a lot of people feel they need the anchor - someone who will produce these type numbers or better (30+ HR and 200 runs scored and/or RBI combined.)

I used to be on the opposite side of the argument, suggesting you could get a decent 1B later in the draft.

Here is what our league champions did for 1B...(now keep in mind, some may have selected Ortiz/Hafner earlier as DH, and I listed Dunn as 1B)

LV - Player -(Round)- HR - RS/RBI Total - Yes/No

1. Morneau (10) 34-227 - Yes

2. N. Johnson (17) 23-177 - No

3. Dunn (3) 40-191 - No

4. Teixeira (1)33-209 - Yes

5. Doumit (20)* several 1B late, all No

6. Sexson (3) 34-182 - No

7. Garciaparra (11) 20-175 - No

8. Howard (3) 58-153 - Yes

9. Berkman (3) 45-231 - Yes

NY

1. Dunn (4) 40-191 No (Morneau (11)- 34-227 (Yes)

2. Dunn (3) 40-191 No

3. Garciaparra (10) 20-175 No

4. Delgado (4) 38-203 Yes

5. Morneau (11) 34-227 Yes

6. D.Lee (1)No Berkman (3) 45-231 Yes Morneau (9)34-227 Yes

7. Delgado (5) 38-203 Yes

Chi

1. D. Johnson (10) 9-67 No

2. Thome (7) 42-217 Yes

3. Teixeira (1) 33-209 Yes Morneau (10) 34-227 Yes

TB

1. Swisher (15) 35-201 Yes

2. Casey (14) 8-106 No

3. M. Jacobs (17) 20-131 No

I apologize if I missed someone, possibly a Thome or another player who qualified at 1B, but was listed at another position, but looking at this list, the first that that pops out is...

What does Tampa have against 1B? :D

Of the 22 Teams (some had more than one who met the criteria, but if you check to see if each winning team had at least one, what I found was

12 Winning Teams have 1B with 30+ and 200+ RS/RBI

10 Winning Teams do not.

Percentage breakdown is 55%-45% in favor of having a very productive 1B in these 3 categories.

I'm still not decided on where I stand for this upcoming year. I would imagine a lot depends on your draft pick and who's available.

Maybe the increased production at other positions, such as SS has diminished the value somewhat...but I would like to point out one more thing I noticed, while some owners benefitted with the later pick of Justin Morneau, not 1 league winner had Albert Pujols...unless I missed it. :D
