As any good distance runner will tell you, a good kick is a necessity if you want to win the race. Given how the fantasy baseball season is more of a marathon than a sprint, having a team that can deliver a good kick in the stretch run is a huge asset as well.
Ed Garcia had that type of team in Las Vegas League 2 in the 2006 NFBC. The result was a strong finish and a championship season.
“It wasn’t until the end of the season that I thought I could win the league,” Garcia said. “There were a couple of times I thought I might finish out of it all together.
“I seemed to be running away with it until July hit and the bottom dropped out. I came back in the last month to finish it off.”
Garcia said it was easy to point to the key reasons why his team finished at the top.
“Definitely my free-agent pickups,” he said. “Eric Byrnes for one and I took some fliers on some young Marlins pitchers. Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez sure helped.”
The FAAB moves were crucial given how Garcia admitted he had to make some adjustments to his Draft Day strategy.
“I basically got away from everything I try and do early by going after pitching,” said Garcia, who has been playing fantasy baseball since 1992. “I took Jake Peavy and Roy Oswalt in Rounds 2 and 3 respectively because all the speed seemed to be gone and no one was taking any pitching.
“I actually took five pitchers in the first 10 rounds and filled out the offense with solid guys at the end. Looking back, I probably could have done even more to bolster my pitching and done even better overall. All in all, I was pretty lucky getting some solid offensive production from the end of the draft.”
Good luck and shrewd moves paid off since the competition in Las Vegas 2 was stout.
“With about six weeks to go we had seven guys within seven or eight points of each other and the Top 4 were within two points of each other,” Garcia said.
At the end, though, it was Garcia’s team that emerged victorious. That was a sweet prize for the attorney, who is married and lives in Las Vegas.
