I see stuff like this and just laugh. Hawk is a Homer. An unabashed homer.
Sometimes it is easier to listen to him than Rockies, Braves or your Royals broadcasters who do their 'homerisms' through cheerleading or multiplying the skills of home players to their fans.
Almost every broadcasting crew homers.
The best crews like the Mets, Giants, and Vin Scully broadcast with truth first and homerisms second.
I can listen to Hawk, knowing what I am going to get when turning up the volume. I can listen because his partner Steve Stone is such a good analyst. Sometimes I can tune Hawk out and listen to the nuggets that Stone has to offer.
What I cannot listen to at all are Rockies, Braves, and Royals type broadcasters.
If taking them at their word, their clubs hardly do anything wrong. Cheerleaders are worse than homers.
Here is an excerpt from a broadcast from the Rockies. Keep in mind that Yasiel Puig made a wonderful, wonderful catch.
Play by play-
'Tulo hits a shot! Deep to right center field!
And Yasiel Puig makes a fine catch.
Tulo really hit that ball hard!
Analyst-
That just shows what a great hitter Tulo is. Hitting a ball that hard and that far to the opposite field. It's part of what makes him one of the best shortstops to ever play this game.
Play by play-
And don't forget the job he does at shortstop.
I have yet to see somebody with a better arm.
A GREAT BASEBALL PLAY WAS MADE! I don't care about Tulo. I want to hear more about the catch, but these guys don't get it, like other broadcasters.
I would much rather have Hawk say 'DADGUMMIT' and be miserable than extolling the virtues of the player who hit the ball.
A lot of fans get used to the 'homerism' from their own broadcasting booth. To me, the Royals are one of the worst.
Especially, the tv crew.
That all being said, I love watching the Royals this year (with the sound muted)
That team plays like they are in a kickboxing match.
They have a fire that I haven't seen in a long time from a team.
Great to see in a time where comraderie among baseball players is at an all time high.
