Pedro v. Clemens

To take Gekko's Pedro post a step further, I wanted to look at Pedro and Clemens. Both are liekly to miss first 2-3 months of season. Clemens will likely have 4-5 more starts than Pedro. Both are a little old (ok, Clemens is very old, but Pedro is injured.)

What rounds do they get drafted in? My guess is people will look at Clemens 16/17 rounds and Pedro 20/21 (thanks to NY drafters pushing his draft average spot higher.)

I think Clemens will have more value.

Clemens 10 Wins, 3.50 ERA, 115 K's, 1.15 WHIP

Pedro 6 Wins, 4.25 ERA, 85 K's, 1.20 WHIP

I wouldn't touch Pedro, but Clemens, I would look at in round 19/20, depending on what he decides to do, if he comes back to start season with NY, then obviously, he's upgraded, if he continues like last year, then I'd project above.

Clemens will be long gone by the 19th. Also, if he pitches enough to win 10, which is probably about right, he'll have a lot more than 115 K's. He went 15th last, probably sooner this yr. Last year the speculation was around 50/50, this year looks better than that.

He should be worth somewhere between a 10th and 15th pick. Pedro shoudl be worth a pick 2-3 rounds later. Both could be good value though, as many won't draft an injured/ possibly retired player unless they're a great bargain.

Is what Clemens is doing something new? (Basically taking the first few months of the season off to remain fresh for the late run/playoffs?)

Do you think other aging pitchers will follow this tactic when their own career winds down?

SBM -

How have you been? Where have the photos been? :D

From what it sounds like on the radio, if Clemens goes to NY, the Yankees want him there sooner than what he did last year.

Could be 15 wins and 150+ K's in NY with 30 starts. Where does he get picked then? 8th round?

Side note, they said if Clemens goes to NY, they will have to get rid of RJ first as the 2 don't get along. (I say "they"...referring to Buck Martinez on XM this morning.)

Will people delay their careers and pull a Clemens? Probably if the money is still there. I think Clemens will be back for more starts this year. He'll make a run at 5,000 K's over next 3 years, so he'll make as many starts as possible - that glory hound! (joke)

RJ can be traded as early as today. The holdup has been he wants an extension (and he's the one asking for the trade.) He must have lost 1/2 his brain with the 1/2 of mullet he got cut off!
