The family who works together doesn’t always play together. Unless they’re in the NFBC.

Steve Pletkin and his father Alex own an accounting firm in Santa Rosa, CA and have been avid fantasy baseball players for over 20 years. But it wasn’t until they joined the NFBC that they actually had teamed up to own a team together.

And in 2006, that partnership paid off handsomely as the Pletkins took home the league title in Las Vegas League 5.

“Without a doubt this was the most satisfying championship we have ever won,” Steve Pletkin said. “To win a local league is one thing, but to be able to compete on a national level and win is an awesome feeling.”

The title was especially rewarding given the stiff competition in Las Vegas League 5.

“Five other teams besides our team at some time or another had a legitimate shot at first place,” Steve said. “I would say the league was extremely competitive.

“At the beginning of August when our hitting was solid and our pitching was finally coming around was when I knew we had a chance to win.”

Heading into the draft, the Pletkins wanted to secure power and speed from their middle infielders in particular and they hoped to land starters who could compile a healthy amount of strikeouts pitching for good teams.

“We knew we could get power from the corners and the outfield,” Steve said.

As is typically the case with championship teams, the Pletkins needed to find some help during the season as well. Among their best FAAB moves were Mark Teahan ($51), Annibal Sanchez ($61), Yorvit Torrealba ($31) and Zach Duke ($31).

Both Pletkins are married and live in Santa Rosa. Steve, 39, has two children while Alex, 71, has four children and seven grandchildren. Steve also has a connection with NFBC founder Greg Ambrosius as the two were owners in the 2003 LABR NL-only league.

But it’s the NFBC which has earned their highest praise.

“Wisely we bring our wives with us to Las Vegas every time we have participated in either the NFBC or NFFC,” Steve said. “It is safe to say that we will continue participating in both the NFBC and NFFC forever. Greg and all his staff make for a top-notch event every time.”
