In years past, the New York Mets were the laughing stock of baseball. Spending tons of money and putting "has been" stars on the field and, aside from 1969 and 1986, and a few other decent seasons, the Mets have been a joke to everyone.
No one has taken more abuse than I have. Everyone knows I have never been shy about my allegiance. I go into every season with hope and typically it ends in heartbreak.
This year is far from over, but this season has a storybook feel to it. Losing their captain to injury for most of the season and falling far behind in May and June, it appeared to be another hopeful season lost.
But this year, for the Mets, the season took a turn, in the strangest of circumstances. We all know what happened that day, but it wasn't just the fact that Wilmer Flores wasn't traded for Carlos Gomez, but the fact that Yoenes Cespedes was acquired the next day for a couple of minor leaguers. Since that crazy couple of days, the Mets have been the best team in baseball. Not only that, the once anemic offense, has become a hitting machine. They have hit 28 HRs in their last 11 games, and 49 runs in their last 4 games. Granted, the past 4 have been against Colorado and the Phillies, but Cespedes has brought a presence to the lineup that the Mets have not had since Darryl Strawberry and Mike Piazza. Moonshot homers and a swag, which has caused him problems with other teams, but seems to fit right into the New York scene.
Who knows, maybe they blow the lead in September again and its another disappointing ending. But, this year has a different feel to it. With WIL-MER FLOR-ES being chanted at Citizens Bank Park in Phily, Mets mania has hit the nation. And if they somehow make it to the playoffs, how exciting would that first series be against the Dodgers with Harvey vs Kershaw and deGrom vs Greinke?
But, even if disappointment is how this season ends for us Mets fans, there is Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, and an attitude now at Citi Field, that will make it fun to be a Mets fan for years to come.

Mets fans have been slithering into Citizen's Bank Park for years, like rodents or Red Sox nation, but this year they actually have a reason to - enjoy every minute of it.

or not. leave it to a mutts fan to fudge the numbers. normally i would hope for their inevitable crash and burn, but the gnats are just an insanely unlikable group. so, go mess, at least until the division round

Yup, you are right. The Jays are a hotter team.. my apologies for the error.. and yes, the Mets might not make it beyond the divisional round, if they make it at all, but then again, no one knows more about losing in the playoffs, than youNorCalAtlFan wrote:"Since that crazy couple of days, the Mets have been the best team in baseball."

Tremendous job by the GM to make an effort to get some sticks. They just needed more options to platoon guys if nothing else. The Brave trade gave them that. Even if that was all they did it energized them. Nobody had to do too much anymore. And people were swinging more often with the platoon advantage. Then Cespedes was the icing on the cake. A middle of the order bat that don't leave lineup no matter who the hell is pitching. This even further strengthened the ability to platoon. And all of a sudden you have a major league at bat up and down the batting order. Really a tremendous job giving themselves a fighting chance without giving up much at all in the process. Enjoy the ride. I think they have a pretty good chance to nurse that lead home. And they won't be easy to beat in the playoffs with power starting arms. Be interesting to see if they can pull of a trade for a quality reliever. That is what they need to do, even though the human burrito, matz, niese etc can shore up the bullpen in playoffs.
