Since I've said that B.Zito's ERA/WHIP should go down and his K's should go up simply because of moving to the NL (no more DH)...does that reasoning follow suit to Randy Johnson?

The Good news is I think it does with him, the bad news is that IMO they will still be barely respectable numbers.



He had success in that ballpark before because he missed bats- I expect him to miss even less bats in 2007.



Worse team behind him, much worse bullpen behind him, another year on that handsome body- buyer beware.



Most likely thing to happen in 2007-



a) Johnson strikes out 225

b) Johnson is voted one of people's 100 most beautiful people

c) Big Dog wins a dollar in the nfbc

I see RANDY coming back to his old team a plus.

IF anything his era should drop at least a full point , and his whip is always good.If healthy , should get his 200 strike outs, or come close .

Maybe less wins , but ild take 12 to 14 wins with his other numbers.Could be a bargain in the 10th to 11th rounds.

I agree with Eddie Jag 100%. His wins will obviously hurt, but I also see atleast 1 to 1 1/2 run difference this year in e.r.a., somewhere between 3.50 to 4.00. 200+ strikeouts, he did have 270 strikeouts just 3 years ago, I don't think 200 is out of the question at all, I think it's very reasonable.

He also will be pitching with WAY less pressure which is a huge bonus in my book. If healthy, he will surprise most.

The funny thing is, people will discount him because of his age or 1 bad year but it's a reasonable expectation to expect good success in Arizona yet most have given up on him.



I would feel at total ease taking him in the 9th or 10th round. 3.50 e.r.a. - 12 wins - 200 K's - 1.10 whip, looks like an easy value pick as you're getting 7th round production for a 10th round price, that is if you agree with my projection.



Don't forget too that Webb busted out 18 wins last year pitching for Arizona so don't automatically think he can't surprise in the win category as well.

Webb pitched well into the late innings (great sinker, low pitch count) so he hung around longer for that elusive W. Johnson was a 5-6 IP last season (cant see that changing) and was lucky to leave with an 8-4 lead that he usually tried to blow whenever he ran out there for the 7th inning.

By the way obvious but good post on why it is not wise to make comparisons between Webb and Unit's win totals.

Not done with my homework on him, but I know he has trouble pitching out of the stretch and I believe that is a tangible concern in this case because of back problems. The dude also doesn't have cartilidge in his knees and as Chest noted, his league won't help him with those problems. He is also clearly in decline. Sorry, Big Dog, you don't just turn that ship around for no reason. His K/9 has gone down 4 of the last 5 years from 13.41 to 7.55. Going NL won't hurt his case for a spike this year, but it's not going to be a 10.62 rate and it's certainly not going to amount to 290 K's.



My system will probably like him, but there are a boatload of concerns right there and you have to account for everything.

And you are right...in April, no one could figure out his two or three curve balls. After that, he could get lit up like a gas can. I think he was on my team in '84 when he batted .290+ or something and was probably the best hitter on my team!
