I'd like to get some opinions on an idea before Greg makes a ruling....
If the ruling is agreeable, I'll take names and we'll start a new league.....

I like the DC format. Everything about it, really.
It helps me get a sense of where players are going. Great prep for the later drafts. No pressure.
I have also reached a stage where a lot of FAAB teams are just not do-able on Sundays.
DC teams help me keep them to a minimum.

That all being said, although DC drafts are each different, there still remains a 'sameness' to them.
So, I would like to try something different.
BUT, in trying this, I do not know if it would have an effect on the Overall part of the DC contest.
I could see how some would even call it 'organaized collusion'.

Here is what I would like to do...
I would like to assemble 15 drafters for a DC contest.
We would all be in agreement on the rules before drafting.
Here's the rules...
Rounds 1-13 would be hitters only.
They would also have to be positionally correct on rosters, except for one position.
That position is each drafters choice.
For instance, a team could look like this

C- Sal Perez
C- Chris Iannetta
1B- Lucas Duda
2B- Kolten Wong
3B- Nolan Arenado
SS- (TO BE PICKED)
MI- Daniel Murphy
CI- Joe Mauer
OF- Starling Marte
OF- Loenzo Cain
OF- Kole Calhoun
OF-Kevin Kiermeier
OF- Billy Burns
U- Miguel Sano

We do 13 positions instead of 14, so that the number 15 drafter gets first pick of pitchers.
For the next nine rounds, starting with drafter 15, we would select our pitchers.
Pitchers can be Starters or Closers.
After round 22 concludes, every team would have a legal roster, save for one offensive position.
Round 23 would begin and all drafters would be free to pick whomever they choose. Of course they would have to fill in their missing offensive position from picks 23-50.

It would be an organized 50 round draft, meant to break up the monotony of a typical 'slow draft'.
My question would be....
Would this draft be fair on an Overall basis?
Although done differently, it seems most teams would look the same in the end.
Just the same, it could also be looked at as 'Organized Collusion' and I wouldn't want somebody to feel that way.

What are your thoughts?

I think the format you suggest is a different contest then the normal DC. Depending on how one looks at it, you could make the argument that the format could help or hurt an overall champ coming from one of these leagues. Because of the structure, everyone should have a more balanced team. Part of the strategy of an overall contest is to pick where you want to get your edge, and this format seems to be all about player evaluation since the hitter/pitcher mix isn't a thought in each round. Not to mention the uproar when Kershaw is 196 in the ADP after draft is done.

The idea doesn't appeal to me personally but if you run it as a satellite that's not eligible for the overall prizes you'll get an idea of how much interest there is and if it goes ahead you'll all have a full season to see just how well/poorly the format Tyra out compared to the traditional game.

Sorry Dan for using your thread for this but since it's a thread of proposing a new idea, I thought I could propose two ideas I thought of for a while.

If you ever played the Diamond Challenge game, you might recognized the idea. No royalty rights for me here, somebody else thought of the base rules.

It was a league that was created to test in-season skills. Every team in the league would start the season with the same line-up. Teams would start to be different at the first FAAB period where you would Buy and drop players. Our in-season rules stays the same, limit of 30 players per team, active line-up stays at 23, 2 catchers, Etc...the same. The initial team creation (of 30 players, including 7 bench players) was voted by a committee within the league. Diamond Challenge was a salary cap format, so the creation of the initial team could be done differently. Obviously this league would not be included in the overall format.

Now the second idea, would be a Draft Champ version of this same concept. The first 23 or so players would the same for all teams of a league, and then every team would draft the rest of their team up until we reach 50 players total for each.

Just an idea...

There would be folks concerned about the meshing of the two formats. There always is, when something different is introduced.
There would also be the adp police who want a pristine catalog.
Maybe the auctions could still be kept out of the DC's while still being a part of the Overall.

Good topic Dan, but since auctions are just an alternate way to pick your first 23 players why not just make auctions a full part of the overall Draft Champ contest? There really isn't an edge to one format over the other, so everyone can pick their draft preference for competing in the overall DC contest; the final 27 rounds would revert to a slow draft. We already have slow and express drafts which are arguably "different" in the same contest, so why not slow, express and auction options?

Also, having 23 rounds in the bag in one day shortens the remaining slow portion by almost half. And It helps grow the existing DC contest leading to bigger prizes.

Yes, ADP would have to be excluded for these leagues.

As for any concern of meshing the formats together - auctions tend to be more balanced, closer leagues, so winning the overall via auction won't be any easier. That shouldn't concern anyone. In the early days people worried about having the main event on different days, but no one seems to care much anymore since it's led to growth and a larger prize pool. Having an auction option be part of the overall DC contest would probably play out the same way.

The biggest challenge might be logistical since there hasn't been a quick way to transfer data from RTSports over to STATS. It's labor intensive and might be too much to handle for a large number of leagues. Plus the delay from auction finish to slow draft of several days is too long. I 100% agree with you if Greg and RT could work together on automating that ...

I would be interested in a leagues restricted DC draft. Something along the lines of:

Snake draft, but restricted to AL or NL for odd rounds (designated prior to KDS). Even rounds are restricted to other league. Draft would continue in this manner for first 24 rounds (or more). Then teams could draft from entire pool.

Would require a lot more planning to set KDS and build roster. Would have to be a private league though.
