Corey Dickerson's Backswing

Watched the Rays vs. Yankees over the weekend and Dickerson's backswing hit McCann in the head/ mask at least three times. Watching tonight and he just nailed Caleb Joseph in the head on a flyout. The backswing is so long that the catcher doesn't stand a chance. Dickerson seemed genuinely concerned about McCann over the weekend and isn't doing anything intentional.

It's a tough spot because Dickerson can't change his swing. The catcher can only stand so far behind and they shouldn't have to change their position. This may become a bigger issue and something that MLB will need to address if one of these catchers gets a concussion. With the focus of today's game on safety, it's something that could be of issue.

I watched the same game.

Odd that this hasn't been an issue to this point, unless he has, indeed, changed his swing.

Was McCann closer than usual??
Doubt it.

They took a side shot of the at-bat and McCann was well behind the plate towards the back of the catcher's box. Dickerson's back foot is right on the chalk line.

Geez, McCann is going to need safety bumpers around his head. I saw something very cool earlier this season. Tyler Flowers designed a mask to minimize the jaw impact on foul balls to the mask. Within the mask are little springs that act as shock absorbers. I thought it was a brilliant idea. It doesn't help with bats to the head of course.
