FAAB mulligans?
FAAB mulligans?
Is there such a thing? I noticed in my league last week that the transactions were changed after FAAB was posted. I sure hope there is an explanation better than the guy with 68 entries gets a mulligan once in awhile. Luckily I noticed it at 8 PM last night because I already had Mazara second on my bidding list and was confused when I couldn't find him to start another list.

Re: FAAB mulligans?
There are no mulligans. It's not uncommon for folks to click on the wrong player drop and to contact us on Monday morning to change the cut. That's what happened here. Tom made this change for the owner after he was contacted and Mazara was not in the player pool after that. We just made another change this morning for a player who clicked on the wrong player to cut.G1AZM wrote:Is there such a thing? We never change a FAAB pickup, but we correct cuts. Human errors happen sometimes and in this case it's obvious that Mazara wasn't the desired cut. We should have notified the league at the time of the change, but again this isn't the only time a cut was changed. Hope that helps.

Greg, if at all possible, would you or Tom mind updating the FAAB threads on the message board when such a correction is made? Embarrassed to admit this, but some of us actually track this stuff

We can do our best Glenn but to be honest this happens on a weekly basis and often several times per week. It's very common. Mark, if someone makes a mistake we will fix the mistake. This isn't something new and it's not something we only do for certain people. Don't make this out to be something more than it is. As Greg said, it's simply human error and when it occurs we will fix it. Simple as that. When you're dealing with several hundred leagues and thousands of teams like we have in the NFBC it is a common situation. I made another fix like that this morning in a satellite league. An owner clicked on Kyle Seager and dropped him by mistake. He emailed me and I made the fix and it was taken care of. No special treatment. Not a mulligan. Just a case of human error and it was fixed. Several years ago in the NFFC an owner dropped Adrian Peterson. It was obviously a mistake and it was fixed. These things will happen and we'll fix them when they do.Gekko wrote:so if we contact the commish monday morning, an owner can have any "inadvertent" drop swapped out with a different player?

Re: FAAB mulligans?
This needs to be spelled out in the rules.
I wonder how many customers have made the same mistake and just felt they had to live with their mistake because they did not know they could contact the powers that be to get it changed?
I do not believe that Greg or Tom were trying to show favoritism, but it needs to be made known to all customers in the rules.
1. Does it have to be done before the 1st game is played on Monday?
2. Does there have to be no news regarding the players involved?
3. What happens if we cannot reach you?
4. Since FAAB has already run, a customer has the advantage of seeing who his closest competition has picked up and this may decide his course of action.
To remain completely transparent, I don't think any changes should be made for anyone after FAAB has run. If you make a mistake and lose a player like Mazara, then maybe you'll be more careful next time.

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Greg and Tom, thanks for handling these in reasonable and rational manner. Yes, people get distracted or just plain careless from time-to-time. No, it shouldn't be a serious detriment to their current year experience nor should one league benefit from "Oops, I dropped Trout!"
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Maybe I'm out in left field; however I can see a small % of owners abusing this, esp if swapping drop players is "very common" as Tom said. You cut a player Sunday night; however an injury comes to light that night or Monday morning making the player you cut more important. Simply email commish office and switch your dropped player. Easy enough.
If a player is dropped, he should remain dropped. If a player is dropped that would impact the integrity of the contest, he should be removed from the free agent pool. Owners don't get "redos" when I comes to entering the wrong bid amounts, drafting the wrong player, etc. We are all big boys. 100% transparency.

Years ago, I made a mistake in dropping the wrong player. I e-mailed Greg and Tom before the drop/pickups were processed.
I was glad the 'human factor' was there to help a human factor of a mistake.
It does happen. Most of the time it is obvious.
I'm happy that Greg/Tom handle this the way they do.

while Greg/Tom do a great job, I would be shocked if owners don't try and "game the system" with this "loophole". Well intentioned; however it will be abused.

Re: FAAB mulligans?
Mistakes sometimes happen.
As long as the error is caught before any games are played by the effected players, it's not a problem.
It's not like he started a pitcher on Opening Day, saw him get shelled for multiple ER's and then removed him from his lineup.

Yes, we can easily make that change on the Message Boards. Mazara should have been removed from last week's listings and Tom can change out the one he reversed this week.King of Queens wrote:Greg, if at all possible, would you or Tom mind updating the FAAB threads on the message board when such a correction is made? This goes back to the beginning of our contests when WCOFF wouldn't even reverse a first round cut because someone accidentally cut Adrian Peterson. We had no problem cutting a different player. It happened several times with the wrong Steve Smith. We've taken a hands on approach to these cuts but we would never change the FAAB pickup.
We will correct these on the boards and do our best to alert the leagues going forward. No problem.

Re: FAAB mulligans?
Though I am in agreement with what Gekko said about personal responsibility at an all time low (and trending the wrong way) I am also a fan of what is fairest and in the spirit of competition. Using the US Open golf yesterday. I am a relatively serious competitive golfer and have great respect for the rules of golf and the integrity behind them. Having said that, I think the rules can be too rigid in an effort to cover every possible outcome. Sometimes unforeseen things can happen and there needs to be a "what is in the best interest of fair play" contingency. Johnson said he didn't make the ball move, nothing in the replay difinitively showed he made the ball move, there was no intent to make the ball move and there was no competitive advantage to the ball moving. I would argue you play on and there should be no penalty even though rules are in place (written 100 years ago when greens did not roll at the speed they do now).
Obviously no one is dropping Nomar Mazara and such a drop is clearly a miss-click on a computer. No team in the league should be able to add a Mazara via free agency. I like when the game operators make a ruling that might not be part of the actual written rules that has the spirit of fair play behind it. It reminds me of years ago when hurricane cancelled an NFL game for the Houston Texans and all NFFC players who had the Texans kicker got screwed with no kicker that week because no faab period was going to run. I kind of thought in the spirit of fairness, though it wasn't "in the rules," the handful of teams who were going to get buried with zero's at a position that week due to a hurricane should be able to pick up a scrap heap kicker. I know it didn't happen but just using it as an example. Greg and Tom themselves are high level fantasy players and I like them making decisions for what is best for the game and fair play.

Re: FAAB mulligans?
Thanks for the response. I'm ok with that explanation as it was obvious he manages at least 68 teams and he just screwed up. I do trust that you guys use your judgement in making these decisions and I trust you don't do so if you sense any wrongdoing. However, your first two sentences completely contradict each other. The second sentence is the definition of a mulligan. A mulligan is a second chance to perform an action, usually after the first chance went wrong through bad luck or a blunder. I also am surprised and disappointed to hear that is isn't uncommon.Greg Ambrosius wrote:There are no mulligans. I was mainly upset that I had spent the whole week thinking over a FAAB strategy that was not available at the last hour. Choo was the guy I wanted anyway, so no harm. I'm glad that owner didn't have second thoughts.

My opinion would be no mulligans allowed. As others have mentioned we don't get to fix the add or the $ amount, so why should we be allowed to fix the drop. It is just as critical as the other two variables.

i've always done my best to double and triple check all of my bids, including who I am dropping. sometimes i even have multiple players listed to drop on the same schedule of bids so it can be a bit complex and time consuming to ensure i have the correct player lined up to be dropped based on the player i pick up.
with 5 managed teams this year and constantly changing bids right up until 10pm, i will no longer need to double or triple checks my drops. like everyone else, sooner or later i will make a mistake with the player dropped (maybe even this coming sunday), and i will contact the commish office to correct. this will save me time on sundays, and i appreciate it.
no more double/triple checking players dropped anymore!!! thank you!!!

Anyone in that league would have seen by Monday morning that Mazara was not available to be picked up via FAAB. He was nowhere in the free agent pool.

Re: FAAB mulligans?
I appreciate all of the opinions on this, but we are going to continue to help where needed on cuts. If someone accidentally cuts Mike Trout instead of Nick Tropeano in Week 1 and alerts us immediately we'll switch the cut. It's not fair to the competition of the league or the overall competition to have Trout eliminated from this league from a simple mistake that easily corrected.
In other cases like Mazara, are we then supposed to remove that player from the FAAB pool? Or are we supposed to keep him in the FAAB pool in this one league because it was human error and he's not worthy enough to be pulled? Are we going to continuously make these calls when the obvious solution is to put that player back on his team? All of these changes are so obvious that they are no-brainers. If they're not or if we're contacted too late, life goes on. But we're not making these moves later in the week. C'mon.
Again, we saw this in football years ago when the WCOFF did not allow an owner to get back Adrian Peterson after he was accidentally cut in Week 1. It's stupid to remove him from the player pool in that league. It happened several times with the wrong Steve Smith being cut and while other contest operators didn't correct it we always did. Nobody ever gets a FAAB pickup changed, nor could we do that. But changing the cut player when needed is easy.
We will make these changes immediately on our listings each Monday. Sorry for any confusion.
