Prince Fielder Retiring @ 32

I'm gonna miss the guy. I think anybody who owned him in 2007 still has a soft spot in their heart for Prince. For the son of a Major Leaguer, he was underestimated a lot growing up, but he had an outstanding career. Three top four finishes in MVP voting. Not many guys can make that claim. Also an amazingly durable player before the neck issues began. He went a five year stretch where he only missed one game and he only failed to answer the bell 13 times over an eight year period. He played in at least 157 games nine times. There are a lot of good players who have never done that once. Whether he was plucking popcorn from a fan in the front row or knocking over all his teammates after a walk-off homer, he was a fun guy to have around.

Eerie stat... If he does retire, Prince would end his career with the same amount of HR's as his father Cecil (319).

That is pretty cool. He did outpace his dad by 20 RBI - 1028 to 1008 - and he crushed him in stolen bases 18 to 2.

Not sure that Prince is happy with that stat! I can see him telling the docs...."I need one more home run before this surgery to beat my old man" (he probably added an adjective or two). I remember a story about how Prince and Cecil hadn't talked in years, how Cecil spent some of Prince's money, etc. Hopefully time has healed wounds. Whatever the case - sad to see his career end this way. Interesting stat - for his first 8 seasons he averaged 160 games played!

Prince's retirement press conference was really sad. This is a guy who was hanging around big league clubhouses since he was a little kid and being forced out of the game before he wanted to go was pretty tough for him. The room was packed with Ranger teammates and everybody got kind of emotional.
