Keeping track of players

Post by LasVegasBlvd » Tue Jan 31, 2017 3:17 am

This being my fourth year competing in the NFBC and my third participating in multiple Draft Champion leagues; I'm looking for a way to see how many common players I have throughout my various rosters. My inquiry is proposed to the witty veteran owners with multiple teams. What can I do to keep track of my players as a whole? Im not that proficient with using spreadsheets which I think would solve my problem. If anyone has any advice for me I would appreciate it.

Nothing fancy here, but I actually type out an index of the players on my DC teams on a Word document. Last year I did 10 DC leagues. I number my teams, such as Bronx Yankees (DC1), Bronx Yankees (DC2), etc. Then, after I complete each DC draft, I manually add my drafted 50 players to my index in alphabetical order. It looks something like this (making up players):

Altuve, Jose (2B) 1,4
Andrus, Elvis (SS) 3,5
Betts, Mookie (OF) 7
Castro, Starlin (2B) 2

I keep hitters and pitchers separate, one after the other, in the same document. While it sounds like a lot of work, it only really takes me about 5-10 minutes after each draft is completed. Also, towards the end of the drafting season, I usually have a bunch of repeat picks so instead of typing in a ton of new names, I'm mostly just adding the number of the team to the index for many of my picks.

I find this helpful during the season. Elvis Andrus gets hurt, or goes on paternity leave, or whatever, I just pull up my index and see that he is on Teams 3 and 5 and then I can quickly go into those teams and take him out of my starting lineups. Also, because there is no FAAB in DC leagues, once you compile the index, it works for the entire season without any need for modifications.

One of my suggestions for technology advancements in the coming years would be for a way to just type in a player's name on your home page and do a search of all of your NFBC teams so that maintaining this type of index would not be necessary. Until if and when we have this capability, this "system" seems to work well for me. Hope this helps.

I cut and paste the my roster into Excel with an extra column to the left of the roster indicating the league (type it in once next to the first player then Edit/Fill Down). For each subsequent league I cut and paste below the previous one, remembering to add the league name in the first column and when I'm done I do a sort on the player name. This gives me an alphabetic list of my players and in which leagues I own them. I do this for NFBC and several home leagues. It's a good reference, the challenge is keeping it up during the season accounting for FAAB and trades.
