Casey at the Bat- A fantasy Version

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Apr 29, 2017 8:48 am

With apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer....and Dave Potts.

The fantasy score did not look good for Potts this final day
He needed two rbi to pass his rival, with just one inning left to play
He was watching the last of 15 games on the last day of the season
Two rbi, just two rbi, that's all I need, he would reason

The last inning came and two outs were made
One more and all hope would fade
He thought if only Trout could get but a whack at that
Oh Man, he'd put up even money with Trout at bat

But Calhoun preceded Trout, as did Yunel Escobar
Calhoun was slumping, Escobar in no way, a star
Potts was sullen, He stared at his computer screen and sat
For there seemed but little chance that Trout would get to bat

But Escobar let drive a single, making Potts stand tall
Then Calhoun, the slumping Calhoun, hit it off the wall
And when the dust had lifted and Potts saw what had occurred
Calhoun was standing on second, Escobar a-huggin' third

From deep, deep down in his throat, Potts allowed a lusty yell
It rumbled through every room of his house, he lit a Pall Mall
His once cold, cold beer was now very flat
No matter now, his conquering hero, Mike Trout was at bat

Trout stepped into the batters box as if he owned the place
There was pride in Trout's gate, a smile on Potts face
Trout responded to cheers and doffed his hat
Potts got his wish, Trout was at bat!

Ten thousand eyes were on Trout as he rubbed his hands with dirt
Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt
Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip
Defiance gleamed in Trout's eye, a sneer curled Potts lip

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air
And Trout stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there
Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped
"That ain't my style", said Trout. "Strike one", the umpire said

Potts shook his head, he knew now he was down to two chances
He felt good though, Trout was facing Smith, not Betances
Two rbi! Just two rbi! He clutched his lucky sock
He'd be the Overall Winner again, with just one more knock

Potts allowed himself a look back on the season this day
19 whiffs by Chris Sale, even two homers in a game by John Jay
One third inning, nine runs by Blach, the risk he knew
Potts snapped back to the present when he heard the umpire yell, Strike Two!"

"Darn!", cried Potts, "C'mon Trout, I need a hit!"
Trout stared at the pitcher, then looked down and spit
Potts saw Trout's face grow stern and cold. He saw Trout's muscles strain
He had full faith that the ball would not get by Trout again

The sneer is gone from Trout's face, his teeth now clenched with hate
He pounds with cruel violence, his bat upon the plate
And now Smith holds the ball, and now he lets it go
And now the air is shattered by Trout's mighty blow

Oh, somewhere in this favored land, the sun is shining bright
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light
And somewhere men are laughing and somewhere children shout
But there is no joy in Dave Potts house- The mighty Mike Trout has struck out
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

AWESOME Dan. Makes me almost (almost) feel sorry for Mr. Potts.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

This has got to be the best post ever on these boards! Now if you could do one with Votto taking a walk in that situation . . .
