That's a wrap for results from the PreMature League.

Miguel Cabrera falling to the fifth round is the lowest round he has been taken since after his rookie year.
PreMature League drafters do not see a re-birth there.
In fact, the fifth round marked upshoots by players in the beginning of the round...

Khris Davis
Anthony Rendon
Miguel Sano
Jonathon Schoop
Domingo Santana
Elvis Andrus
Corey Knebel
Ryan Zimmerman

Followed by players who dropped because of shortcomings last year....

Miguel Cabrera
Robinson Cano
Nelson Cruz
AJ Pollock
Buster Posey

Although, I think in Cruz case, his shortcoming is his age, not statistics...

An interesting round for sure.

Because of no adp, no hype, and no spring training developments, this is one of my favorite drafts.
It seems each year, is my favorite year to draft, but this one really is. There are so many players that can help/hurt a team to quantify.
The home run binge has taken several drafters in different directions.
Some want to ride the crest of the wave of homers.
Some take it for granted and build speed as a forethought.
Some want pitching first and power second.
The strategies are endless this year.
And drafting, drafting is more fun this year than I can ever remember.

Thanks for sharing. Certainly interesting to follow. Definitely looking forward to that first 50-rounder. Always amazes me how much things change every year, including our perceptions of veterans who may have had an abnormally strong or weak year. I have my eye on a few players and was modestly surprised to see how early they went off the board here. Not much gets by NFBC'ers. Still, many intriguing players not taken in the first five rounds who I think will be there come March. Have fun with the remaining 25 rounds!

plenty of guys could be in that 5th round- but man the hitting and pitching is pretty flat. an aside- i love kershaw in fantasy- but has there ever been such a great pitcher so bad in the playoffs. he is literally a #4 starter on an average team in the playoffs. most of the stud pitchers i remember were good to great in the playoffs.

Is it just me or is Tommy Pham in the 4th round too early? Career Minor leaguer who is unlikely to repeat that BA or HR total.

I'll take a crack at this one.
Podcasts, writers, and 'experts' love labels. Career minor leaguer, utility player, superstar...all of little matter or use.
Each year our player expectations and inventory change.
It doesn't matter now that Tommy Phan spent years in the minors.
It doesn't matter now that Marwin Gonzalez came off the bench before this year.
It doesn't matter that Chris Taylor was seldom used by any major league team before the Dodgers.
What matters is next year.
Now, we expect more out of these three and a lot more players.
The writers and Forecaster will, for sure, be stuck in the middle as far as Pham.
Meaning that whenever a player 'comes from nowhere' to have a great year as Pham did, these ;prognosticators' will predict a season between his zenith of last year and where Pham was before.
Same will happen with Gonzalez and Taylor. It's not rocket science to be 'stuck in the middle' with these sorts of players.
Brett Gardner hit seven homers in 2016. 21 last year. You can bet that most forecasts will have him hitting 14 to 18 homers next year.
And of course, these will not help drafters in the least.
Believe me, not one publication will have Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton with more home runs next year than hit this year.
They never predict that a player can improve on an already previous wonderful year.
It's safer to assume that they come back to the middle.
But you can bet that Judge and Stanton are afforded many homers, likely in the 40's.
These 'forecasts' are misleading both ways. The Middle wasn't a bad enough prognostication for Jonathon Villar.
But nobody, as far as I know, predicted close to Villar's fallout year following his brilliant one.
Now, they will forecast a year between the last two.
Which again, helps nobody for drafting. :D

To talk about Pham specifically, he was the Cardinals best player this year. By far.
He never was given a real shot in the past by the Cardinals because of an already crowded outfield.
Now, they know when given a chance, that he can be better than Grichuk, Piscotty, or others.
Pham's main problem is a degenerative eye condition.
The drafter is fighting that more than Pham's previous label of being a career minor leaguer.
As I told the drafter, if Pham can see with 20-20 vision, he'll probably reward him by being a 20/20 hitter.
The fourth round means he believes in Pham. He doesn't want to be stuck in the middle with the possibility of losing Pham (something scribes don't have to worry about)
At 4-15 or 5-1, the drafter had 28 picks before another selection. He wanted him at 4-15 instead of having some other drafter taking him at 6-2 which may be closer to his adp when adp is established.

I took pham. in this really early draft I will take a "heart" pick because you can make up for 1 bust with our 1st free agent period because there will be about 8 really good players available that none of us saw as starters at this point. travis shaw was one of those guys last year because of the trade. if pham gets out of the spring with his eyes ok- he will go between pick 60 and 90. so I took him early- but you can't fake that walk rate. he should bat second and get 600-700 pa's. even if he hits 10 homers 25 sb's and 100 runs are pretty much a lock- IF his eyes are ok.
