What Are The Baselines To Win In The 2018 NFBC?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Jan 18, 2018 1:46 pm

We are getting a lot of interest from new players who are interested in playing in the NFBC this season. That's GREAT NEWS!! Welcome aboard everyone and best of luck in any format you choose.

One of the key questions we get asked is: Can I see past results so I know what is needed to win in the NFBC? It's a great question and without a road map it's a long, long journey. We get it.

Unfortunately, not all of our past results have carried over to the new SportsHub site. If you played in the NFBC last year or in the past, you still can check your old teams and old overall standings on the nfbc.stats.com site. But that won't be active much longer, so do what you need to do there to get rolling.

But if you are new to the NFBC, it's our duty to help you out. So let's try with the 10 scoring categories and show you some baseline results. Here we go.

First of all, it's a good rule of thumb to try to score 80 percent of the available points in your league. That's a starting point. If you do that in a 15-team NFBC league, you'd finish fourth in all 10 stat categories and finish with 120 points. You stand a very good chance of winning your league title if you do that. No guarantees because sometimes you can win a league title with 105 points and other times you can lose a league title with 125 points. But finishing fourth in each stat category is a very good basis to win money in the NFBC.

So with that being said, let's look at the 10 categories and see where the 80 percent mark was in 2017. We can't say that these categories will be the same for 2018, but here's your starting point:

NFBC 15-Team Leagues

Batting Average: .270
Runs: 1,070
Home Runs: 320
RBI: 1,060
Stolen Bases: 140
ERA: 3.80
Wins: 95
WHIP: 1.250
Strikeouts: 1,400
Saves: 80

Hope this helps. Enjoy.

One interesting note of the stat categories above is how much the game of fantasy baseball has changed in the last three years. It's amazing how the game has changed, and in turn, how we've had to change with it. I'm not sure we've ever seen this type of dramatic turnaround in a three-year period like this.

Here are the same 10 stat categories and where the 80 percent mark was in 2014. Remember, this is just three short years ago:

2014 NFBC 15-Team Leagues

Batting Average - .267
Runs - 989
Home Runs - 237
RBI - 956
Stolen Bases - 155
ERA - 3.32
Wins - 99
WHIP - 1.191
Strikeouts - 1,415
Saves - 89

So in just three short years, NFBC owners are looking for 93 more Home Runs than they were a year ago. That's amazing. The 320 Home Runs for this year means that you are searching for 23 Home Runs per offensive position. Amazing. You also are searching for 104 more RBIs and 71 more Runs, while looking for 15 fewer Stolen Bases.

Look at the ERA rise from 3.32 to 3.80. Amazing. We're struggling to find Saves in today's game as more than 50 percent of all designated Closers on Opening Day lose their jobs throughout the year. And even Wins are getting hard to find as last year saw the first time in over a century that Major League Baseball didn't have a single 19-game winner. Isn't that crazy?

So enjoy today's game. It's not your father's game. Heck, it's barely yesterday's game!!

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
