Tom/Greg In Tout Draft Tonight At 8 pm ET On Sirius

Post by Tom Kessenich » Tue Mar 06, 2018 1:20 pm

Greg and I are taking part in the annual Tout Online Mixed League draft tonight at 8 pm ET. The draft will be broadcast live on Sirius 210/XM87. You can also follow along with the google docs link below. Greg is picking 4th and I will pick 6th. Should be a lot of fun.

Ahhh, you have the 6th pick. You can still get your favorite shortstop there.

Greg gets Kenley @ 5/64. That's five spots lower than he's gone in any draft this year.

That was a 15-team, 29-round draft in less than 3 hours. Pretty smooth. Here's my team:

C - Wilson Contreras
C - J.T. Realmuto
1B - Miguel Cabrera
2B - Paul DeJong
SS - Trea Turner
3B - Alex Bregman
CI - Eric Hosmer
MI - Ketel Marte
UT - Hanley Ramirez
OF - Eddie Rosario
OF - Gregory Polanco
OF - David Dahl
OF - Cole Calhoun
OF - Jose Martinez

P - Stephen Strasburg
P - Jose Berrios
P - Aaron Sanchez
P - Ervin Santana
P - Alex Cobb
P - Mike Leake
P - Alex Reyes
P - Kenley Jansen
P - Archie Bradley

Reserves:
Gerardo Parra (protection for Dahl)
Jason Vargas
Ivan Nova
Scott Schebler
A.J. Ramos
Matt Andriesse

Realmuto went 177th and Jansen went 64th. I couldn't let those two guys continue to fall past me. I took a lot of upside guys in David Dahl, Alex Reyes, Jose Martinez and Aaron Sanchez, although you could say those are all risky picks. Thoughts?

Great pace -- under three hours. Let's see Rex beat that!

Greg and Tom were on the turbo side of the draft. That half was drafting like someone called them and said hurry, the fridge just broke and the beer is getting warm.

My quickie review in analyzing this draft:

 Greg is learning...slowly.
 Tom should stick to football
 Someone should have Corey Parson investigated as the conductor of that trainwreck
 And at least half of the rest of this league should never be allowed to use the word "expert" in association with their names when it comes to these drafts.

My thoughts on my team. The first post-draft projection has my team finishing 4th so that's not a bad thing to see. I wanted to load up on talented offense and I think I did that. Got some great values like Posey, who went two rounds later than his NFBC ADP and should be a good option in this format.

I went with a different approach with my pitching. I wasn't going after any of the big aces (although I thought I might get Bumgarner as he really fell) so I was going to get some solid options and then get guys like Andrew Miller, Betances or Devensky and try to keep strong ratios in place rather than feeling the need to have a certain number of SPs going. We'll see how that plays out. I wanted one of the top closers but that didn't happen so I got two lower-tiered options and will work the WW for the inevitable closers who will appear during the season.

All in all a fun draft and even with one round less than the NFBC to get a 15-team draft done in under 3 hours is fantastic. I loved the pace.

I just knew who I wanted. Had my queue loaded up and picked from the top. Easy. Peasy. When you're so long between picks there shouldn't be any real deliberation when it gets to you. All that work should be done targeting the players between your picks.

Assuming the players I wanted were the ones I should've wanted, of course.

No, that makes you M'Baku. But he was a badass and so is Lindor, your consolation prize from that auction, so you can't complain too much.

At least a 98.4% chance Shuri could crush a Chapman fastball just by looking at it.

"Black Panther" references, like the movie, lame. Saw it this weekend. I will never see that time back again. Most of the "solo" Marvel movies are pretty bad, though I do like the "team" themed ones. Oh, well.

Noticed Ohtani picked by one team as a pitcher and another as a DH. Interesting league treatment.

Three catchers picked in the first ten rounds (and two of them by Tom and Greg)...maybe a new low (reflective of 2018 in general) for catcher value.

Sorry Tom. Acuna starts the year in Gwinnett (but he will not be there for long).

Greg's "Balls of Stone" draft! :D Miggy (old and still in Detroit) and Hosmer (SD still the Grand Canyon) back to back!

Kinda like Gene's draft most.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Let me tell you something about this Acuna. He's never going to make it until he learns to wear his hat with the proper reverence for The Game.

I know Acuna won't start the season in the majors. As long as he isn't in the minors as long as Moncada was last season I like my chances. It's a gamble, but one I'm willing to take.

Oh, and Black Panther was flippin awesome. As are all the Marvel films.

No, I personally do not think he will be in the minors very long. He will be up before May unless he gets hurt or otherwise shits the bed somehow. It will be a good pick for you, but I will miss seeing him live so easily at Gwinnett.

Again, I like the "team" Marvel, especially Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder...for Guardians 3....

Groot...wise but mono-syllabic in that ALWAYS says the same thing...can we change his catch phrase from "I am Groot" to "Take no walks!"....Dan Kenyon!

Rocket...Smaller...wirey...but dangerous...do not want to get on his bad side....can we add a little narcolepsy to the mix? Dan Semsel!

Hmmm...can we bring back Yondu? And can Glenn Lowy whistle?
