I’m guessing Mariners brass knew about this issue before they acquired Dee Gordon.

Why? Cano has multiple years left on his contract, so if the Mariners are thinking long-term they continue to develop Dee Gordon as a centerfielder and plug Cano back at second base in August and for the next 4 years. Just my two cents.
