2007 NFBC Draft Day Facts

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Mar 26, 2007 5:47 am

It's fun to look at the Average Draft Positions of our 28 live drafts (25 main event leagues plus three Ultimate Draft Leagues) and look at the trends that took place. Here are a few quick facts as I scanned the boards this morning:

** Albert Pujols went No. 1 in 27 of the 28 live drafts. In the one league that he didn't go No. 1 in (New York 1), he went third as Alfonso Soriano went first and Jose Reyes went second. Here's a look at the range of picks from the consensus Top 15:

1. Albert Pujols (as high as 1st, as low as 3rd)

2. Jose Reyes (high of 2nd, low of 5th)

3. Alfonso Soriano (high of 1st, low of 4th)

4. Alex Rodriguez (high of 2nd, low of 7th)

5. Carl Crawford (high of 3rd, low of 8th)

6. Ryan Howard (high of 3rd, low of 10th)

7. Chase Utley high of 4th, low of 12th)

8. Johan Santana (high of 4th, low of 21st)

9. Carlos Beltran (high of 4th, low of 16th)

10. David Ortiz (high of 6th, low of 18th)

11. Miguel Cabrera (high of 4th, low of 20th)

12. Vladimir Guerrero (high of 7th, low of 20th)

13. David Wright (high of 8th, low of 20th)

14. Lance Berkman (high of 9th, low of 22nd)

15. Grady Sizemore (high of 11th, low of 24th)

** Jose Reyes went second overall in 16 of 28 leagues. He went second in five of eight New York leagues, with Alex Rodriguez going second in one of the New York leagues.

** Johan Santana went in the first round 25 of 28 times. He went as high as fourth twice and as low as 21st. That team drafted 10th in Las Vegas League 8 and took Ryan Howard in the first round, Santana in the second and Bill Hall in the third. He also went 19th overall and 16th overall.

** Jimmy Rollins was one of the more interesting picks as he went as high as eighth and as low as 25th. Two prominent NFBC owners grabbed Rollins early, 6th and 8th overall.

** The 15th spot was the most successful draft spot last year and it was interesting to watch that spot again this year. The starting combo of Lance Berkman-Jimmy Rollins or Grady Sizemore-Jimmy Rollins or speed plus Mark Teixeira or Travis Hafner was an interesting start.

** Owners obviously targeted speed in the early rounds. As a result, Sizemore jumped into the first round, Jimmy Rollins went 16th, Derek Jeter went 20th, Hanley Ramirez moved up to 21st, Rafael Furcal went 33rd, Chone Figgins 38th, Brian Roberts 42nd, and Juan Pierre 45th. Here’s where the other SB threats went: Willy Taveras 83rd, Ryan Freel 145th, Chris Duffy 171st and Scott Podsednik 174th.

** Jonathon Papelbon went 117th overall as a starter, but now that he's a closer he should have more value. Consider that Francisco Rodriguez went 44th overall and Joe Nathan went 47th overall and you can see where Papelbon would have gone as a closer.

** Even though the first round seemed pretty set, 25 different players went among the first 15 picks. Pretty interesting, I'd say. The second round was a little more obvious as only 39 different players were among the first 30 picks. Interesting again, wouldn't you say?

** One of the widest ranges for a Top 100 pick was Rocco Baldelli, who ranked 70th overall. He went as high as 46th and as low as 108th. Rich Harden went 84th overall with a high of 46 and a low of 122.

** Daisuke Matsuzaka went 72nd overall with a high of 51 and a low of 104. Alex Gordon went 115th overall as another top rookie, with a high of 66 and a low of 183. Delmon Young followed Daisuke among rookies as he went 76th overall with a range of 61 and 123.

** Barry Bonds went 161st overall with a range of 110 to 223. Roger Clemens went 240th overall, with a high of 195 and a low of 300.

Greg,

According to the ADP, Miguel Cabrera (whom I picked at #10 in Tampa #1) was chosen in 27 of the 28 targeted drafts. He really cannot be out there in someone's FA pool, can he?

BTW, I had hoped that Teixeira, Holliday, or Rollins would make it back to me at pick #21 in the second round. But noooooo...all three were gone with the 14th, 15th, and 16th picks. Sizemore and Berkman were gone also.

Good stuff!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I had the 14th pick in one of the Sunday Ultimate drafts, and was hoping to get one of Grady Sizemore and Jimmy Rollins with my first pick. Well, they both got taken ahead of me in the 1st round (Sizemore 11th, Rollins 13th). I still managed to come away with David Wright (1.14) and Lance Berkman (2.02) -- an excellent pair to be sure, but not at all what I expected to come away with.

Good stuff! This is a input typo that the owner of Cabrera has not seen yet. LOL. There were about 6-7 of these and most have been fixed.

Greg,

Not being picky or anything, but merely curious.

In your facts you stated that Pujols was taken 1st 27 of 28 times and that the one time he wasn't it was Alfonso Soriano. I was in that league (in fact the co-manager on the team that got Pujols with 3rd pick)

But you later mention under Reyes that he was picked once as the first pick. Not sure if that was a typo or not.

Thanks

I added these facts to the first post as I'm still diving into the numbers:
