Draft Day Question: Last 10 Rounds

Okay, this is a question for everyone who has competed in an NFBC draft this year: What strategy did you use for your LAST 10 picks? Did you try to handcuff certain players from your earlier picks? Did you go for prospects who could blossom later in the season? Did you grab unwanted veterans who still had value? Or did you just go with the flow as the beers kicked in? :D

Everyone has unique strategies for the early rounds, but what about the last part of the draft? What was your strategy and can you reveal it to the baseball world? Let's hear about it. :D

Mine was to grab solid middle relievers who i thought that at sometime during the season, either by injury or by poor performance from the closer, would possibly become the closer. My other was to grab young upside guys playing behind aging veterans or ijury prone players (i.e., i drafted Milledge in alot of leagues because I think Shawn Green is finished)

Greg .... I call it the " Build and Fill " strategy. In the past I have frequently reached for players to early, so this time I took the BPL ( Best Player available ) in the 1st 20 rounds and then in the last 10 rounds Filled the rest of my line-up with those Players that fell through the cracks. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many " Value Picks " fell to those later rounds. I tried to go with " Proven Value " in the first 20 rounds and " Potential Value " in the last 10 rounds. By doing this , reduced my risk to reward ratio significantly. First 4 picks were.... Guerrero, Manny, C. Patterson and V. Martinez ........ in the last 10 rounds I was able to gamble on 2 Rookie Pitchers ( Pelfrey and Baily ) and still get 2 veteran pitchers that I think fell way to low, ( Woody Williams and Mike Hampton )..!I would be willing to print my draft if U want to see the whole thing and comment on it.

We try to take chances in those late rounds on guys that might have some upside. Historically we've had some great luck with really late picks, we got Sizemore a few years back, Laroche, Huston Street, etc.

This year we took guys like Josh Hamilton, Greinke, Eric Reed, Brian Wilson, etc. Sometimes guys ar total busts but you're going to need to drop a guy here or there so it's worth a shot.

Too bad Eric Reed just got sent to AAA this morning, ugh.

All of the above, but I guess the slant is fill with players who may have been overlooked/undervalued but can help in specific categories (Youkilis and Runs, El Duque and strikeouts), or have upside given their age/experience even though they may not have produced peak results yet (Gorzelanny, Francis). I also look for injury returns that may be able to produce, even over a short term (Eaton, Cliff Floyd) and outright gambles if they get full time jobs that can impact NFBC categories (German and Cla Meridith).

A mixed bag.

woof- good luck in our league. that "build and fill" with patterson in the 3rd allowed carpenter to fall to me at pick 45. he'll probably get hurt because i never, ever thought he would be there at pick 45. who were your 2 "placeholders" ?. also you took pelfry with pick 19. a nice pick either way.

Good eye Hunter.... I did reach a round early for Pelfry, but he was the one sleeper I couldn't wait on any longer. As far as Patterson, what was his ADP by the way..? and my 2 place holders ended up being Hinske and Hamilton. But I did get Josh Johnson ( sp ) Late, why do you think he slid so far down..??

My strategy was to go after high upside guys that may not start right away and also to get lucky on some closers in waiting.

However, I was pleasantly suprised to get Uribe and Marte in the bottom 10 which just goes to show you that you shouldn't rely 100% on whatever strategy you decide.

I still managed to get Kemp, Hughes, A Miller and Sanchez as my high upside guys. And Wilson and Tankersley as my closer hopeful guys.

My only regret was pick 30 where I decided between M Izturis and Jason Lane. But I had to have 1 homer pick.

Oh well, the perfect draft still eludes me.

woof,

I believe your placeholders were Hinske and Hampton. Not Hamilton. Hamilton was gone in the 27th.

I remember reading Hampton in the chat box.

.... Well, I like your catchers. After that...

Corey Patterson (3rd) and Edgar Renteria (5th) are AT LEAST 3 rounds too soon -- tough to win when you're passing up early-round talent.

Also, Nick Johnson, Josh Johnson and Eddie Guardado are out for a lengthy period of time. Are you really going to hold onto these guys until they come back?

I hope your placeholders are Alfonso Soriano and Johan Santana! :D

Yeah it was Hampton. and King your a very funny man, " I like your catchers after that..... ", very funny. 30 picks , 3 on the Red Cross.... I hope that's the worst of my problem this season...lol..! You have to figure the last 3 or 4 picks of your draft will be free agent meat in the 1st month alone. BTW, whats team look like..?

Man- woof whackers I am glad I did not see that team right before bed time, I would have to leave the night light on.

What KOQ said on Patterson etc, and that pitching could be really bad, probably were better choices than Vlad and Manny at one and two also.

Greg,

1. Avoid clogging my roster with AAA bound highly touted prospects

2. Fill Middle Infield Gaps

3. Don't reach for SP (let them come to you)

4. Grab potnetially high upside Batters (Kubel, Baker, Lane)

5. take a chance or two on some MRP's

Whoof,

The Good - your weren't aloud 2 3rd Rd picks

The Bad - Double AA players weren't eligible to give you a better chance :(

The Ugly - you may receive a lifetime suspension from all future NFBC competitions
