John Pausma Wins The 2018 NFBC Main Event & $125,000

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Oct 02, 2018 7:15 am

John Pausma of Tinley Park, Illinois is the 2018 NFBC Main Event champion and the winner of the $125,000 grand prize. John had an unbelievable season in all of our contests, but he did his best work in our 15-team signature event. John drafted in Chicago out of the 2nd spot and was a Top 10 team most of the year before moving into the lead in early September. John finished 105 points ahead of Bradley Libros with Jeff Mitseff finishing third. Rounding out our Top 5 were Nickolaus Sackett and Ryan Atkins. Prize money included $35,000 for 2nd, $25,000 for 3rd, $15,000 for 4th and $10,000 for 5th as we paid the Top 14 overall.

Great, great job everyone. Here's the final standings featuring the Top 100 teams:

Of the Top 20 overall teams, here is where they drafted this year:

No. 1 - 2 teams
No. 2 - 2 teams
No. 3 - 1 team
No. 4 - 1 team
No. 5 - 1 team
No. 6 - 1 team
No. 7 - 1 team
No. 8 - 4 teams
No. 9 - 1 team
No. 10 - 3 teams
No. 11 - 0 teams
No. 12 - 2 teams
No. 13 - 0 teams
No. 14 - 0 teams
No. 15 - 1 team

12 of the 15 draft spots were represented in the Top 20 overall. There were 9 teams in the Top 7 spots, 7 teams in the bottom 7 spots and 4 spots right in the middle. Very interesting. Good job everyone.

This was definitely a historic season for John Pausma as he won his third NFBC Main Event league title out of Chicago. He also won there in 2012 and 2013. This year he also won two league titles in the Rotowire Online Championship, while finishing in several top spots in our other national contests. Here's a look:

1st - NFBC Main Event
2nd - Rotowire Online Championship
8th - NFBC Auction Championship
4th - NFBC Cutline Championship, Wild Card Tier
22nd - Rotowire Online Championship
27th - Auction Championship
31st - Rotowire Online Championship

He almost won the $75,000 cash bonus for winning the Main Event and the Rotowire Online Championship, but fell one spot short in our 12-team contest. That's one helluva run for sure. Great job CHAMP!!

John thinks I look at the world "differently". He said that. I don't get it.
Now, I know that folks are going to chime in and say what a nice guy John is.
And I suppose in real life, John is a nice enough fella.
Whatever.
Really, John is like 'Sybil'.
In fantasy sports, John is not nice. He is a jerk.
Worse, John is an intimidating big guy who uses a laptop like a weapon.
The type of guy where if you see him walk into a draft room, you shudder, look away, and hope he doesn't see you.
Or worse, sits at your very table.
At the table, he changes again, from villain to Houdini. As if reading minds, he takes players just as other drafters were on the brink of drafting them.
Worse, he compiles a team that will haunt everybody at the table for the next six months.
Away from the table after drafting, John becomes 'Nice guy, John' again.
Approachable, smiling, open.
Don't be fooled.
When going home, John once again changes personalities.
He becomes 'Grinder John'.
Nothing escapes this man's attention as the season unfolds.
And every Sunday, with every team, 'Mad Scientist John' is concocting a poison that will slay all other drafters in every league he is in.
He knows that there is no SuperMan to his Lex Luthor. John re-writes this comic book.
In this edition it reads, 'JOHN PAUSMA, CHAMPION'

This year, John perfected his secret formula.
It did, in fact, slay every other drafter.
To be candid, I watched John's 'other teams', the teams that were not as successful as his Main Event winning team.
It looked to me that John put as much effort into those teams as his winning team.
He is the immaculate grinder.
A trait that one has to have to enjoy success in our hobby.
John, congratulations to you and all your fantasy personalities.
I know you'll be lauded as 'the nice guy', but damn, those fantasy traits are awesome and my big takeaway.
Congratulations.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

It’s the old cobra kai mantra “the enemy deserves no mercy”... John showed no mercy this year on the nfbc.

Complete and utter domination.

Congrats on an awesome year.

Already sent my personal congrats and props to JP privately, but just couple of observations after reviewing this entire thread:

1. Yes, I agree whole-heartedly that Pausma is a complete dick or something like that as per Doughy's post. AND

2. He obviously drafted with a complete bunch of clueless lightweights in Chicago based on what I saw from his draft, so Chicago, here I come! :P

One thing to add about John Pausma's NFBC Main Event overall title is that he BARELY won his Chicago league title. He finished with 133.5 points, but one the Chicago League title by only A HALF POINT!! Kyle Brinkmann finished second with 133 points while finishing 9th overall. Wow, great league race there.

Congrats John!

Heck of a season. Does this mean you have to draft in Vegas to get your trophy? Please?
