Dirty Dozen

Tom/Greg,

Can either of you comment on this contest? It appears to be a $1,000 Online that ends at the end of Week 23. Any rationale behind offering this format?

I'll give it a shot. We wanted to re-introduce a 12-team ME-type of contest, apart from the Rotowire Online. Part to gauge interest in current customers, and possibly attract new customers at the $1,000 price point. Part of it was to also remove some of the "grind", especially when MLB rosters expand to 40. Also, this is a very limited national contest...we'll close it at 192 entries. The league prize ratios are a bit lower than normal in order to get to a nice overall grand prize of $50,000. Basically it's just another option to the current array, but we liked the concept. And, yes, it ends on Sunday Sept 1st....4 weeks prior to end of regular MLB season.

I cannot locate the league payouts in this format.

We haven't officially announced this contest yet because we are still working on a few unique angles to make this contest special. We'd like to tie it into the Main Event with an insurance policy to give it extra juice and really give everyone a chance to win both overall titles and the cash bonus. We're still waiting on that answer.

The concept, as Darik said, is interesting:

1. We still love the 12-team format, which is the most popular in fantasy baseball, and believe a stand-alone contest with a bigger entry fee has merit.
2. We feel a big carrot with a very small pool of teams has potential. Turning $1,000 into $50,000 has merit when there are only 16 leagues involved.
3. People have been asking for a contest with single-entry or at least very minimum entries for a bit (there's another thread for that on the NFFC boards). This will provide that (we're still discussing on the number of teams per user).
4. People have bitched about September callups and how it affects races at the end of the season. This will provide a solution, with the season ending on Sept. 1st before fantasy football kicks in and before the September callups get massive playing time.
5. It's the same format most of the fantasy baseball understands: 12 teams, 30 rounds, $1,000 FAAB, weekly moves, 23 starters.

We will find out if this is a contest that is needed or even wanted by our die-hard community. If not, it will go the way of the NFBC Primetime. If so, then we'll continue to grow it. We don't give up easily and believe some people want an alternative to the NFBC Main Event, while others want another contest with a worthy grand prize. We will NOT expand beyond 192 teams (16 leagues) and entries will be limited. If you win your league title, you are definitely in line to win the grand prize. That's the concept and one we think will catch on.

Once we finalize this plan we'll announce on the boards. We asked IT to set it up and that's why you are seeing it on the Contest page. Once we have word on the insurance policy to beef this concept up even more, we'll be good to go. Thanks for asking.

You've almost got me interested in a 12-teamer. Like the single-entry idea.

So why would this contest end four weeks prior to the end of the regular season? :? This isn't fantasy football, guys. Let's stop trying to come up with "creative" ways to make it similar to that sport. You already have the Cutlines and others for this. I'll pass on this format as it now stands for sure. How about brainstorming with some of us to come up with enhancements to the myriad of baseball contests you already offer? Many things could be done in this respect to increase the interest level to make them more enticing to play in various ways. In fact, there are already a few being offered that, though currently limited, are hot commodities which were conceived of by NFBC competitors over the years.

I love this concept! I've enjoyed some OC success, and despite trying my hand in the Main Event every season, I have been pretty unsuccessful there, as I am apparently a 12-team league specialist. I wasn't happy when the NFBC Primetime couldn't get legs and eventually went away. I hope this new contest takes off. And I also really like that it ends on September 1. With as many baseball and football teams that I do, September is such a grueling month. With all the September call-ups, MLB teams no longer really utilizing the DL with the expanded rosters, pitchers getting skipped with no notice, etc., I've been wanting a contest that cut out September, much like football cuts out week 17. I will be taking as many teams as you allow in this contest, though I understand those that like the idea of a single entry contest. But if you set it at something like 3-max, I will be taking 3 teams for sure. The big carrot is always nice to chase, but I would prefer some better league prizes than just 3x and 1.5x entry for 1st and 2nd. A little disappointing to not see the more standard 4x and 2x. But hopefully this concept takes off and you can quickly up the league prizes for 2020. Like you stated, though, just by winning your league you should be in the running for the overall.

Personally I don't see the appeal as I don't see much difference between this and an Online format. But to each his own.

If anything, I would suggest a DC draft format but with Cutline (i.e. points) scoring.
