It's almost hard to believe that the industry standard once was 8 hours per pick!!

No one is to blame. When you started the DC's, cell phones capable of easily tracking a draft and making picks weren't so ubiquitous. I think this change to shorter clocks is just another example of the NFBC being responsive to the desires of your consumers.
