NFBC To Introduce Memorial Day "Second Chance" Contest

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Apr 24, 2019 7:46 am

We are happy to announce that for the first time in the NFBC's 16-year history we are going to offer an in-season national contest for our players. We are calling this one the Memorial Day "Second Chance" Championship because stats begin on Memorial Day and continue through the end of the MLB Regular Season.

The contest is formed with the same rules as our Rotowire Online Championship: 12 teams, 30 rounds, in-season FAAB and $350 entry fee. League prizes are $1,400 for 1st Place and $700 for 2nd place, with a top grand prize of $10,000. We will pay the Top 6 overall finishers and the contest is limited to 180 teams (15 leagues).

Drafts will be held the week leading up to Memorial Day: May 21-26. Stats will begin accumulating on Monday, May 27th and continue through the rest of the regular season. All drafts will be held online and the draft room will contain 2019 current stats for all players. There is a 650 innings pitched minimum for this contest.

All rules can be found here: https://playnfbc.shgn.com/rules/246

The draft times are tentative right now. If you'd like to see anything added to the list let us know, but here's the starting times:

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 8:00 PM ET
Wednesday, May 22, 2019 10:00 PM ET
Thursday, May 23, 2019 8:00 PM ET
Thursday, May 23, 2019 10:00 PM ET
Friday, May 24, 2019 8:00 PM ET
Friday, May 24, 2019 10:00 PM ET
Friday, May 24, 2019 11:00 PM ET
Saturday, May 25, 2019 4:00 PM ET
Saturday, May 25, 2019 8:00 PM ET
Saturday, May 25, 2019 10:00 PM ET
Saturday, May 25, 2019 11:00 PM ET
Sunday, May 26, 2019 2:00 PM ET
Sunday, May 26, 2019 4:00 PM ET
Sunday, May 26, 2019 6:00 PM ET
Sunday, May 26, 2019 8:00 PM ET
Sunday, May 26, 2019 10:00 PM ET

Prizes are as follows:

League Prizes
1 $1,400
2 $700

Overall Prizes
1 $10,000
2 $4,000
3 $2,500
4 $2,000
5 $1,500
6 $1,000

The "Second Chance" leagues give owners a reboot on the season and another chance to win more money. It also allows players to better know the player pool and to draft players with "known" value. It also gives some owners who have suffered a lot of injuries to their early season teams another chance to still enjoy the MLB season. Enjoy and good luck everyone.

This will be the only national contest "Second Chance" offering that we'll do this year. We are still discussing some other possible private league offerings at the All-Star Break and even after Memorial Day, but we think this national contest has the most appeal. Also look for an update on our NFBC $50/50 Teams Contest that will be run on the Fanball site. We're looking forward to launching that weekly Tuesday night offering very soon.

Oh, and we will have a 3-Pack on Registration shortly for $1,000.

Thanks all and best of luck with all of your full season teams.

I hope this contest does well.
There have been several contests here and other sites in the past where drafters can draft teams after the season has begun.
For some reason, "Second Chance" the preferred term or name.
It has a negative connotation and has me shaking my head in why it is used.
As if, asking for only owners who have failed during April with their teams.
Call it the "Memorial Day Classic" or the "The Merry Month of May Madness" or "Junetember Jamboree" or "Short-Season Sweepstakes" ...whatever.
Drafters who have teams doing well will want another drafting experience as well as teams that aren't doing well.
The 'Second Chance' thing is over used and cheapens the contest before it even starts.
Not trying to be the politically correct police. It just doesn't ring right.
Just my opinion.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Thanks for the insight Dan, but I don't think "Second Chance" means that you blew your first chance of drafting. In fact, I would think owners who are doing well this season and know the player pool very well will opt to grab at least one team in this national contest. I know I'd feel better about adding one more team if I was kicking ass with my first teams.

If you like NFBC Memorial Day Classic Championship, so be it.

It's only a name. Hopefully the concept takes shape and it's something that can grow through the years.

Shit. I’ll take 15 teams. In one league. Desperate times call for desperate measures. ;)

Me too. This would have to be a stand alone I bet though as $350 is their wheelhouse price point.

Always a trouble maker in the group!!

Yeah, we understand the love of 15 team leagues from our veterans and we do have a plan to offer private 15-team "Second Chance" leagues once we get a little further along. Our plan is to offer $150 leagues with first place being a FREE entry into the 2020 Main Event. If people think a higher price point with Top 3 prizes makes sense we can offer those as well.

But our first goal is to launch this national contest and do it right. We first started this crazy idea called the Online Championship in 2009 with a $10,000 grand prize in football and we weren't sure that was going to get off the ground. The first year was a sweat to reach our goals, but that concept has taken off so fast that this year in the NFFC we are offering a $200,000 grand prize. We don't think the Memorial Day Contest will ever reach those heights, but let's make this work in 2019 and build up this new game year after year after year.

Also, we had 2,112 teams in the NFBC Online Championship this year, so there is enough interest in the 12-team format to make this work with 180 teams in our debut season. The 15-team "Second Chance" leagues will be private leagues and this 12-team format will be the national contest. We think both can work.

When you're ready to draft again, let us know. We can fire these up with a little notice. We know you guys love to draft and we've set up the software and the in-season game engine to handle these type of leagues. So let's make both formats work this year.
