The beauty of the fantasy baseball season is that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. A slow start early doesn’t doom your team to the fantasy wasteland.
Brian Zeid can certainly attest to that in the NFBC.
Struggling and in 14th place in Tampa League 1, Zeid’s huge week not only catapulted his FUPayMe2 team to sixth place in the league standings but atop the entire NFBC field as well. Zeid’s team, thanks to a big week from Mike Lowell offensively (.421-3-9) finished with 3,179 to take the Week 6 top honors.
“This week was a nice surprise,” Zeid said. “We knew our lineup was solid but they just haven’t been able to produce until now. Our goal from the start was just to compete since everyone who has played in the NFBC knows that anything goes at the end of the year.”
In addition to Lowell’s big week, Julio Lugo (.400-1-7) and Jay Gibbons (.421-1-3) also had strong weeks offensively. Brad Penny and Jake Peavy combined for 28 strikeouts to lead the pitching staff while J.J. Putz had three saves.
The contributions from Peavy and Putz were a result of Zeid’s Draft Day strategy.
“We wanted to get one stud starting pitcher and one stud closer in the first eight rounds,” Zeid said. “Peavy and Putz fell to us and (Aaron) Harrang, (Brad) Penny and (Andy) Pettitte were just a bonus. Not to mention getting Vladimir Guerrero at No. 20.”
The big week was an added bonus for Zeid, who has had a great year away from the NFBC as well, especially recently as he just had a baby daughter.
“We are dedicating this past week to Brooke Zeid,” he said. “She is the latest newcomer to the NFBC family, weighing in at 7 pounds, 13 ounces.”
