NOW ONLY 6 SPOTS LEFT in the Tuesday, March 30th 8 pm ET NFBC Main Event Online. Two other leagues that were full have already been created and draft spots have been announced. Once this league fills, the league will be created and draft spots will be announced 1 hour later. Plan accordingly with your KDS preferences. I know we can fill this one.

Also, ONLY 3 SPOTS LEFT in the Wednesday, March 31st, 8 pm ET NFBC Main Event Online league. We have 72 teams, so if we fill this up with 75 teams before 7 pm ET today we will create five different leagues and announce draft spots at 8 pm ET tonight. If not, we'll form four full leagues with the first 60 signups and announce draft spots tonight at 8 ET. Then the fifth league will be formed once it is full, but I think we can get there today.

Let's concentrate on these two leagues today, get them filled and officially call the Main Event a sellout of 40 or more leagues. BOOM. Here we go.

Incredible! Among these 645 teams, there are 399 unique owners. Any idea if 399 is a record as well?

Another record: putting up a SOLD OUT sign five days before Opening Day. Sleep well, guys.

Never underestimate the power of the NFBC Drafter.
It is awesome to see this Event grow larger every year.
Greg put a great game together and the drafters love it and gravitate to it more each year.
Well done by all.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!

On behalf of myself, Tom, Darik, Brian and everyone here at SportsHub Games Network we'd like to say thank you to everyone who has participated in the NFBC this season. As I announced in Las Vegas, this is a record-breaking year for the NFBC Main Event, but also for all of the NFBC. We will have over 18,000 teams to manage this year and we'll give away more than $4 million in prizes in 2021.

And as Glenn stated above, we sold out the 2021 NFBC Main Event exactly FIVE DAYS to the hour before Opening Day. We had three spots left during my speech at the Las Vegas Main Event and before the first round was completed we were sold out. Amazing and it's made this whole week/two weeks so enjoyable knowing that we were going to sell out for a 17th straight season.

Think about that: 17 STRAIGHT SEASONS WE HAVE SOLD OUT THE NFBC MAIN EVENT!!!!!

I've told this story on our radio show before, but in 2004 when I proposed the idea for a high-stakes fantasy baseball contest with live events to my bosses at Krause Publications they were very hesitant to approve my plan. At the time, we were a 100 percent Employee Owned company, so as an employee if you lost money for the company you were letting down and hurting the stock value of your 400+ fellow owners. But I had created the Fantasy Sports Trade Conference in 2000 and that had been successful and our custom publishing business through fellow magazine competitors was also a success.

So they backed this plan, but we very easily could have been one and done.

I was sooooooo stressed during that period before the launch of the NFBC. I announced the NFBC in October of 2003 at the AFL Symposium and we didn't get our first signup until early December. I got to meet Dave Cushard in December and he said the Leaderboard Sports guys would definitely get behind this. That was a first step help, but by early March we still had only 145 signups.

I was flying to Phoenix for the LABR auctions and I remember flying over the Rocky Mountains and just wishing that damn plane would go down to put me out of my misery. I remember crying on the plane as I looked out because the stress was just too much. I even remember what I was listening too on my iPod. It just was a very low point.

But when I landed Pete Lukowicz left a voice message on my office phone that he was going to split a team with Will but they each wanted their own team. We got a couple of other signups that weekend and over the next 10 days we finished at 195 teams with a goal of 300. It was a loss and then we lost the same amount of money in football, but our other aspects within the division performed well above budget and by playing a shell game within the company our division had reached plan after all.

During the budget meeting with my boss, he said he would support me one more year. ONE MORE, he said. The NFBC in 2005 was critical to either making this happen or being two-and-done. Of course, we sold out the Main Event in 2005, the NFFC grew that year as well and soon we were adding online satellite leagues. The high-stakes division became successful enough that when our stupid Venture Capital group that had bought out the employee stock in 2004 needed to raise capital during the recession we were the first division to be sold. It sucked, but the writing was on the way for Krause Publications because of bad management and moving out probably was the best thing that ever happened to us.

Landing at SportsHub and working with this IT team was also the next best thing. We have a great team here and we will continue to improve the product and innovate with new games. And now I can even fly over the Rocky Mountains and enjoy the scenery, rather than hope that my plane goes down into the mountains (sorry other passengers on that 2004 flight with me).

Thanks again all and good luck.

Re: SOLD OUT: 2021 NFBC Main Event Record 645 Teams

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Mar 30, 2021 8:38 am

Oh, and one other point about us closing out the Main Event 5 days early:

I chose not to add more leagues even though there were plenty of people in Las Vegas asking us to do so because my goal isn't to see how high we can go in the Main Event. The goal is to offer the best contest that is fair for everyone involved. This year all 43 leagues got their draft spots 5 days before Draft Day, or at worst, 4 days before Draft Day. Adding last minute leagues just to go beyond 645 teams when our goal was 600 teams was never a priority to me.

Plus, now people know as they have in the past that if you don't commit early enough you could be left out of the competition. We aren't trying to be greedy with this contest. If we sell out and get everyone in a league who signed up before we hit our goal then that's all we want. I'm not shooting for unreasonable numbers. I just want to sell out each year and create a fair contest for all the participants.

Plus, we've now created demand for the Rotowire Online Championship and the Cutline Championship. Since Saturday, we've averaged almost 100 Rotowire OC signups a day and we should sell that contest out today and then some. And the Cutline is nearing a sellout too, or at least very, very close to it.

The success of the national contests is key because we guarantee so much prize money up front and our future is very solid now thanks to all your support in 2020 and 2021. Yes, we were successful before, but so many things could have turned out differently over these last 12 months, but they didn't. They turned out well for us and well for our great customers, who supported us through thick and thin.

And we will never forget that. Amazing everyone. Amazing. Now let's enjoy an amazing season and look for some unique offerings DURING the season as well. After we get some sleep, we'll stay in touch with all of you on that. Thanks and stay well.
