Barrett traded to the Padres

When I saw this headline I immediately thought of the ramifications in fantasy baseball. First, Barrett goes from one of the best hitting environments to one of the worst. Second, I assumed that Bard would be going to the Cubs which would have been nice for him, but the Cubs opted for the defensive catcher, Bowen. Barrett takes a hit playing in a worse park but Bard owners have just had a full time catcher reduced to once or twice a week play, Bard owners cannot be happy.
In real baseball, what the heck are the Padres thinking?
The Cubs are ridding themselves of a problem. Understandable.
The Padres upgrade their offense with a little more power but is it worth it?
The Padres bread and butter is their pitching staff. Barrett has long been thought as one of the worst defensive catchers in baseball along with being one of the worst at calling a game.
Maddux wouldn't throw to him in Chicago, I'm guessing that will continue in San Diego. And with the will's and ego's of Wells, Young, and Peavy along with the talented bullpen, Barrett may have a very short stay in San Diego. It should be interesting keeping track of San Diego's team ERA going forward.
Sorry for the long post, thoughts?

the good news is- i heard derek lee told barret to punch young for him- so michael should get off to a great start. also- and i digress a little- what were the dodgers thinking when they opted to spend a bunch of $ on schmidt and let maddux walk.

Ahhh Fellas, We haven't seen a post from Captain Hook in awhile, but one may be forthcoming as this thread would more aptly fall under Fantasty/MLB Talk.

Studies have shown that catcher defense has virtually no effect on ERA, unless you count allowing stolen bases, which, of course, Barrett also does. But the good news for Pads fans is that their team has not much worried about the stolen base for some time now and he's actually far better than Bard in that category.
As a Barrett owner, I love the trade, even with the move to a pitcher's park. If anyone needed a change of scenery, it was Barrett and I was really sick of the days off and the threat of him losing his job.

I believe that Barrett caught nearly all of Greg Maddux's games in 2006 with the Cubs (his last year with the Cubs). It is certainly true that Javy Lopez didn't catch many games for Maddux!

LOL Andy, while I was posting I thought I should stop and put it in fantasy/MLB talk, but you're right we haven't heard from the MB police in a long while.
Brian, this just isn't about Barrett being a bad defensive catcher. This is about a guy that pitchers do not want to throw to. Its already a given that he'll sit with Maddux pitching and I'll guess that Peavy, Wells, and Young have enough clout to do the same if they think he's calling a bad game or his personality doesen't mesh with theirs. My guess is that he sits just as much and stews till he gets traded again.
Non-contenders like Tampa Bay, Colorado, and Toronto would be much better fits for Barrett.

Bard will get more playing time than Koyie Hill did in Chicago. Bowen is the big fantasy winner at the expense of Bard & Barrett.

As a Barrett owner this year (and last) I hate the trade. Either the Pad's think Bard needs more development or there will be another trade before too long. I hope Barrett is the one traded and I hope he gets back to at least a neutral hitters park. His marginal power will not translate well into Fantasy results in SD.

When i first heard about the trade I was like wtf are the Padres thinking. I know what the Cubs were trying to do; ship a problem out of town, but what were the Padres trying to accomplish with the trade. As a Bard owner, I expected a little more than 2 home runs at this point and maybe this is what the Padres are thinking as well. He started off the season to my knowledge batting in the forth hole so I know they expected something from him this year. Last year Piazza was the main catcher and Bard was the backup and Bard seemed to excel more from that spot. I think the Padres are trying to push Bard into performing more like he did last year by taking some pressure off him as the main everyday cather. Eventually I think he will become the main catcher but im not sure he is ready for the spot as of yet.
