3rd round

I have kicked myself all year long for making what turned out to be a very poor choice in round 3. Last night I said how bad did I miss it? In hindsight who could I have had? I then realized using the avg rankings for main event drafts- that most everyone missed it. Talk about a group of busts:

V Wells, Furcal, Carpenter, Damon, Konerko, Atkins, M Young, A Jones, Mauer, Figgins, and Dye

At best you held serve with V Mart, Roberts, K rod, and Pierre. I also found it interesting that those were the last 4 picks of the round on average.

Young had a horrible start but has gotten his bavg over 280, by the end of the year he will be over 300 , and his steals are up , maybe 15.

His homers are down , but should go over 90 runs and 90 rbi's , maybe even a hundred.

Good post Chest and as I mentioned on our Content Panel League MB, I also felt I hurt my team in the third-fourth round. With the 14th pick, I grabbed Mauer, who as you say may hold serve, and then with the second pick of the fourth round I took Joe Nathan. Why was Nathan so bad? Because my second closer was Tom Gordon and I failed to grab another new closer via FAAB after Gordon went down to injury. Anything Nathan does alone now is almost useless for my team as a one-closer team.

I have other teams that are struggling with Wells, Konerko and Young on them and I've kicked myself several times for not taking someone like Victor Martinez there. But honestly, looking back at that round there seems to be more road bombs than smooth travel.

My league had an Abreu and a Delgado in there too. More busts.

I got lucky with Roberts this year after going with the rookie move of two arms in first three rounds last year (Santana, MCabrera, Oswalt). Needless to say, my 06 bats were sub-par.

I still think its a little early to be calling guys like Atkins, Young, Furcal, Wells, Jones, Damon, Dye, and Figgins 3rd Round busts. As the weather heats up this summer these hitters might heat up as well and their stats may reflect a different story. I drafted Wells in the third round and I still have some hope.

Yea I was one of those fools that drafted Konerko with my 3-5 pick. Man what a waste. He like most of the White Sox have been a very frustrating bunch to watch this year. Not only was my 3rd round pick a BUST but so was my 2nd ....the dreaded A Rameriz. But I'm fortunate to be in such a " weak league" --- LV1. So there is still some hope for me.

That actually raises a great point- are better days ahead for most of them sure... but it will still be very, very difficult for more than one or two guys on that list to outperform their draft spot.

I also think it is a little eary to put VMart in the great pick list, he has never shown a full season of elite and consistent contribution- which is so tough for a catcher to do. I realize his trends have been big 2nd halves so we will see.

He is very streaky. In previous seasons, he could be the hottest hitter in baseball or the coldest depending on the month. But you look at those numbers at the end of the year and they are simply dominant for his position. He has always seemed to me like a player who could do more if he stayed a little more consistent. He looks like a 30 homerun hitter but he seems to fall short every year. I think this year he is putting it all together. And what a lineup he's got surrounding him.

Even if they rally, I think the best you can look at (as a Dye owner) is a wash. You always hope your third round will perform like next years sexy 1st round pick.

Mr. Rockwell Why couldn't you have started this this thread about a month or so ago? Both Konerko and A. Rameriz just went deep---albeit solo shots---but its a start. Thanks buddy

I would say Chone Figgins is well on the way to paying off his owners. As for the rest, well, Wells has been a huge source of frustration!!

This raises the unasked question that we would all love the answer to. What [if any] pre-season indicators can be used to pinpoint the 3rd/4th type players most likely to fail. If a top 30 type guy fails then so be it. These are almost always the same 30 guys with merely slight variations in the order taken. The 3rd/4th round is where the decision process truly begins and success or failure here determines winners from the pack.

Overly simplified, you need to get expected value form your 1st two picks to compete and you need solid value from your next two picks to win.

How about the 6th and 7th round pick's, i got Sheffield in the 6th round twice.Zimmerman in the 6th round in the Ultimate.

My worst pick in the Ultimate round 4 BJ Ryan, a guy who is never hurt, should have listened to his hurt back in the spring, as the blue jay's lied .Dont they know that fantasy players put up thousand's of dollars and dont need to be lied too.Sorry for going way off the subject.
