Shawn Johnson Is The 9th Inductee To The NFBC Hall of Fame

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:39 am

We are happy and honored today to announce that Shawn Johnson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is our ninth inductee into the NFBC Hall of Fame. Shawn has competed in the NFBC since 2007 and has become one of the winningest owners in our contest's history. Shawn is currently 2nd on the NFBC's Career Earnings list with $629,140 while competing in ONLY 48 LEAGUES over the last 14 years.

Shawn very well could be the winningest owner in NFBC history when it comes to league titles vs. number of leagues entered. Shawn mainly concentrates on the high-dollar private league auctions and he has had unprecedented success in those leagues. In fact, he's won five of the last six NFBC Diamond Auction League titles, earning $75,000 per year with those titles. Nobody has dominated a private league like Shawn has done with the NFBC Diamond Auction League.

But overall, he's won 15 of the 48 leagues he's entered since 2007, a 31.25 winning percentage. He's finished 2nd seven times and 3rd four times, which means he's cashed in 26 of the 48 leagues that he's entered. That's a cash rate of 54.2 percent!!

As I mentioned, he has won 5 NFBC Diamond Auction League titles, but he's also won 4 NFBC Auction Championship League titles, including three at the $2,500 price point. He's also won 3 NFBC Super League titles, one NFBC Ultimate Auction League title, one NFBC $400 Draft Champions League title and one NFBC XII League title.

Of his 7 second place finishes, he's finished runner-up twice in the Ultimate League, twice in the Super League, once in the NFBC Primetime, once in the NFBC Main Event and once in the NFBC Auction Championship.

While he doesn't play in the NFBC Main Event much anymore, he has competed in the Main Event five times and has cashed three times. He's finished 2nd once, 3rd twice and 4th twice. Here's where he has finished in the Main Event overall during his five chances: 27th (2014), 29th (2015), 48th (2008), 50th (2009) and 93rd (2021).

He's also finished 2nd overall TWICE in the NFBC Auction Championship. He won his NFBC New York $1500 Auction Championship League title in 2016 and finished second overall, and then won the Las Vegas $2500 Auction Championship League title in 2021 and finished 2nd overall. He also finished 16th overall in the NFBC Auction Championship in 2019 while winning the Las Vegas $2500 Auction Championship League and 18th overall in 2018 while winning the Las Vegas $2500 Auction Championship League.

Just for good measure, the only time he entered the NFBC XII was in 2013 and he won the league title in the only league he entered and finished 5th overall. Not bad. He does like the 12-team format and has won the NFBC 12-Team Super League title each of the last two years (2021, 2022).

He entered our 12-team NFBC Primetime national contest in 2014 and 2015, finishing 2nd in 2014 in his league and 52nd overall, while finishing third in his league in 2015 and finishing 29th overall.

He may have had his best year in 2022 when he entered six leagues and won four league titles, while finishing second in another league. In 2022, he won the Diamond Auction League title, the Ultimate Auction League title, the NFBC 12-Team Super League title and a $400 Draft Champions League title, finishing 19th overall in the NFBC Draft Champions National Championship. He also finished second in the New York $2500 Auction Championship League, finishing 30th overall. Just to prove he's human, he finished 12th in the NFBC Diamond League.

One of the criteria for earning a Hall of Fame spot is "Excellence in several NFBC formats; consistency in multiple formats." In that regard, there are few who are as consistently successful as Shawn Johnson. Playing against some of the best players in the NFBC, he consistently wins and cashes in the private leagues. He's also excelled in the 12-team format and the 15-team format, while excelling in auctions, drafts and even draft 'n hold formats. And while he doesn't compete in many of the national contests, when he does, he's always fighting for a national championship.

While he doesn't do the volume that many other players do in the NFBC, he excels in the handful of leagues he plays in each year. And nobody wins as consistently as Shawn Johnson.

It's why he was an easy choice to become our 9th NFBC Hall of Famer. Congrats Shawn. Well deserved.

Here again are the 15 league titles he's won since 2007:

** 5 NFBC Diamond Auction League titles
** 4 NFBC Auction Championship League titles (3 of which are $2,500 league titles)
** 3 Super League titles (2 are 12-team league titles)
** 1 Ultimate Auction League title
** 1 NFBC XII League title
** 1 NFBC $400 Draft Champions league title

Add it all up and it's:
15 - NFBC League titles
2 - 2nd place overall finishes in the NFBC Auction Championship
1 - Top 5 overall finish in the NFBC XII
2 - Top 30 NFBC Main Event finishes (in 5 attempts)

The scary part is that Shawn is getting better with each passing year. Over the last four years (he didn't compete in 2020 because of the pandemic and no live auctions), Shawn has won 11 of the 20 leagues he's entered. He won four of six league titles in 2022 and three of five league titles in 2021. He also won four of nine league titles he entered in 2018-19.

Shawn now becomes the 9th NFBC player to be inducted into the NFBC Hall of Fame. He joins:

NFBC Hall of Famers
2010 - Steve Jupinka, Shawn Childs
2012- Lindy Hinkelman
2015 - David DiDonato
2017 - Dave Potts
2019 - Mark Srebro
2020 - KC Cha
2022 - John Pausma
2023 - Shawn Johnson

Shawn will be competing in New York City March 17-19 in the $2500 Auction Championship League and he will be competing in the MTM Invitational Ultimate League for the first time. He's going to defend his NFBC Diamond Auction League and Ultimate Auction League titles in Las Vegas March 23-26, while also competing in the Diamond League and the $2500 Auction Championship League. He's also back to defend his last two titles in the NFBC 12-Team Super Online League.

We will honor Shawn in New York City and Las Vegas, but especially at the Mirage in Las Vegas on Saturday, March 25th before the Main Event drafts at 11 am PT. We have a big stage at the Mirage Grand Ballroom and we'll bring Shawn on stage along with past Hall of Famers and national NFBC champions. It will be a great way to kick off the day before we host 6-7 NFBC Main Event drafts. I can't wait.

If you want to look at how Shawn has progressed through the years, here's a look at his year-by-year progression:

We have been stingy in placing our champions in the NFBC Hall of Fame because it's the ultimate honor in a very tough format. That explains why we've inducted only nine players in 19 years. It's a high bar to receive this honor.

But we look for people who dominate over time and dominate in multiple formats. Our previous Hall of Famers have done just that and Shawn certainly has done that since 2007. It's an impressive resume against some of the best players in the world. To win that consistently over so many formats over so many years is not common and it deserves recognition. Welcome to the NFBC Hall of Fame Shawn Johnson. You have done it the old fashioned way: YOU EARNED IT.

Please welcome our newest NFBC Hall of Famer: Shawn Johnson!!! And be ready for the official induction in Las Vegas!! You will enjoy it!!

We did a late night podcast with NFBC Hall of Famer Shawn Johnson last night and Shawn gave away some of his secrets on how he's been able to win so many high-dollar private leagues over the last five years. Hint: He got his ass whooped in 2017 and he re-evaluated how he assembles a team. And the end result is 20 leagues since 2018 and ELEVEN league titles!!!
