Big weeks from Shannon Stewart (.485-3-4), Carlos Lee (.320-3-9), Edgar Renteria (.320-0-5) and Ryan Garko (.318-0-2) led the way offensively. Tim Hudson won twice and fanned 15 while Bobby Jenks recorded four saves to lead the pitching staff.

The summer hasn’t been kind so far to Todd Nord in the NFBC. Leading Chicago League 4 and in the Top 20 overall in the early going of the season, Nord’s team has fallen on hard times since the start of June.

But Nord remains confident his team can make a strong run the rest of the season. And last week, his team showed his confidence was anything but misplaced.

Thanks to strong balance and production, Nord’s Cheap Seat Chuggers team led the way in the NFBC last week with 3,014.5 points.

“I have been waiting a long time to have a top overall week,” said Nord, a member of the NFBC since its inception. “I have had many weeks where my team has been close to finishing first but just could not close the deal. I guess it’s one more thing I can cross of my NFBC to-do list.”

Nord’s top finish wasn’t secured until Sunday when Cliff Lee and Jenks combined for nine strong innings on the mound and his offense

“It was just enough to get it done,” he said. “On a given week I expect to see my team do something like .290-40-10-40-5 and 3.50-5-1.20-50-5. I hit all of those marks for the most part.

“Funny thing is not many of my players had a huge week. Shannon Stewart had a career week with three homers and near .500 average. Carlos Lee and Edgar Renteria also had big weeks.

“My pitching once again carried my team with solid starts by everyone and Jenks adding four saves. To bad (Jon) Lester didn’t get his start. I’m still waiting to see what he can do this season.”

Nord believes he’ll need more weeks like this one if he’s going to claim the Chicago 4 league title.

“People don’t realize how good Chicago 4 is,” he said. “I have to say it’s the best collection of top-end managers stuck in one league in the history of the NFBC.”

Given the competition he was up against, Nord knew he had to have a strong plan in place going into his draft. He said his preparation was aided immensely by a conversation the night before the draft with fellow NFBC owner Brent Grooms.

“We had to have talked about at least 100 or more sleepers and guys who we thought would fall off or have career years,” Nord said. “We had the same thoughts on most of the players we brought up. It’s always a nice feeling when you’re on the same page with one of the top NFBC managers.

“I look back at my draft and feel I did a very good job. I just didn’t hit that super sleeper in the late rounds, other than (Al) Reyes. My first 10 rounds worked out great.”

Nord lives in Fargo, North Dakota, where he works for Valley Landscaping, where he specializes in building patios and retaining walls. For finishing first last week, Todd wins a Kenji Johjima autographed baseball courtesy of Upper Deck Authenticated.

I agree with Chicago 4 is a loaded league :)

For proof, check out the 2006 finishes of several owners, and how tightly packed the top of the standings are this year...
