I have asked STATS to add the following players to our September DL list and by tomorrow you will be able to reserve these players before Friday's games. I will update the list tomorrow if additions need to be made, but I wanted to get this list started today since STATS needs to manually enter these:

DL Players For Week 26

Mike Cameron

Lyle Overbay

Shin-Soo Choo

Carl Crawford

Adam Dunn

Milton Bradley

Shawn Hill

Shaun Marcum

I will continue to watch the status of Johnny Estrada, Josh Willingham and Rafael Furcal. It looks like Estrada and Willingham are done for the season, but then I've seen reports that both are available for pinch-hitting duties this weekend. I'll update those tomorrow if needed and of course watch for any other updates on other players. Good luck everyone.

Are there players on the list who would not have been placed on a 15-day DL if the same injury had occurred mid-season? I hope a "two week injury" criteria is being applied. If there's even talk of someone being used as a pinch hitter or pinch runner, that doesn't sound like they're the equivalent of mid-season DL types.

Alternatively, next year, would you consider allowing everyone to make one active/bench transaction each Friday after the rosters expand in September? To me, this would address the injury issue while providing equal treatment.

To me, this would address the injury issue while providing equal treatment. You can look up the players I've listed for this week yourself and most of them are either going under the knife, have gone under the knife or would be out at least two weeks during the regular season. Crawford already hasn't played since the 16th and is out the rest of the season. I've tried to look at each one individually just as you have stated.

I think we've seen a lot of September injuries this year that have been announced early in the week. In my own opinion, the rule has helped NFBC teams this year at the expense of Tom and I having to make tough judgement calls. I think when the season is over we'll analyze if we made the right calls or not and then evaluate the rule. As a player, I'd want it. As the commissioner of the NFBC, I can do without it. So we'll figure it out and announce the rules for 2008 on Monday. Registration opens on Monday as well!! :D

It appears the Freddy Sanchez is also a candidate for the DL list. Done for the season as of 9/26 -- shoulder surgery.

Proposed Sept. DL rule for next year:

If a guy designated by Tom and Greg as a DL guy does indeed play, then the replacement players numbers should be taken away and replaced by the DL playedr who did post numbers.

Comments?

Greg,

I have Coco Crisp, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Roy Oswalt on my active roster.

I've got no case with Crisp. He only has an ear infection. There's a reasonable chance he might get in a game over the weekend.

Perhaps I've got a better case with Yuniesky Betancourt. He's got a sprained elbow and can't throw -- not good when you're a shortstop. It's the kind of injury that probably would have landed him on the d/l had the it occurred mid-season.

Oswalt's situation seems identical to Paul Maholm's situation, and you've created an exemption for Maholm.

Maholm was scheduled to pitch today (Thursday) but was dropped from the rotation during the week. Per rotoworld: "Paul Maholm will miss his start Thrusday because of continued back soreness"

Likewise, Roy Oswalt was scheduled to pitch tomorrow, but was dropped from the rotation during the week. Per rotoworld: "Roy Oswalt will miss his final start of the season due to general soreness"

Please strongly considering applying the same criteria to Oswalt that was applied to Maholm. I understand if you think it's going too far with Yuni.

Best wishes

Eric Price

IMO, "general soreness" isn't disabled

What's the difference between "general soreness" and "back soreness" - the detail referred to pain specifically in his forearm.

I don't disagree with you in principle -- just that Oswalt's in the same boat as Maholm

Eric, I talked to Greg and we both agree "general soreness" is not something he would go on the DL for. So he won't be added to the list for the final week.

Maholm has a specific injury - his back - whereas Oswalt is just "sore." Two different situations in our opinion. Sorry Eric.

I would have to say that the Maholm and Oswalt situations are extremely similar. I think either they both should or they both shouldn't. There seems to be some inconsistencies here.

this would indicate to me that he could have pitched if the Astros were in the playoff hunt. IMO this situation is similar to James Shields, shut down for precautionary reasons

[/QUOTE]I agree with GG. Oswalt would be pitching if the game meant anything.

To be honest, I think I disagree more with Maholm getting DL'ed with "soreness", albeit specific to his back. I would have been more inclined to say both shouldn't. I know Oswalt would pitch if it meant something, but I think Maholm would too. That is if he were any good.

Our NFBC Player News says:

News: Betancourt sat out Wednesday's doubleheader against Cleveland after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 sprain of the flexor bundle in his right elbow.

Analysis: With only four games left, Betancourt is unlikely to play again this season. He has established himself as the team's shortstop for the foreseeable future, batting .289 with career highs of nine homers and 67 RBIs.
