Rules Changes For 2008

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:40 am

On Monday, we will open Registration for the 2008 NFBC event and post our Rules for all of the NFBC events by mid-week. As of right now, here are the changes expected for 2008:

1. I am leaning towards increasing the Innings Pitched minimum from 600 to 700 in all NFBC leagues.

2. I have not included the September DL rule for 2008. The Friday DL rule stays as it was for 2007 as there were very few problems with that rule this year.

3. We will not add any new free agents to your FAAB lists after 7 a.m. EST on Sunday morning. This will allow owners more time to evaluate their free agent lists without always having to look for new free agents throughout the course of each Sunday.

4. We are also moving the FAAB deadline for each NFBC league from 7 to 8 p.m. EST each Sunday, giving an extra hour of analysis to our owners.

5. We will tighten the eligibility rules as previously stated on these message boards.

6. We have raised the entry fee in our auction leagues from $1,250 to $1,300, but have left the $650 price alone and have also left the main event entry fee alone at $1,300. Co-manager fees remain at $50 for 2008. We are paying back 75% in prize money for all live events and 80% in prize money for all satellite leagues.

7. All Auction League prizes have been restructured this year to make them consistent. Of the available prize pool, we are giving back 64% to first place, 24% to second place and 12% to third place. The same forumula is being used for satellite leagues.

8. We are increasing the $100 winner-take-all NFBC satellite leagues to $125 this year and providing a free entry to the 2008 NFBC main event for the first place finisher and $200 to the second place finisher.

9. We will shoot for 390 teams overall in the main event, up from 375 this year and will spread the additional prize money to increase some of the overall prizes. We are increasing third place overall to $12,500, fourth place overall to $6,000, fifth place overall to $3,000, sixth place overall to $1,500 and we've added a free entry for an 11th place overall finisher. League prizes remain at $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second and $1,250 for third.

10. Every contest rule now has a statement that "All decisions by the commissioner are final." Make sure you can agree to that statement before signing up for 2008. Hopefully folks trust decisions made by Tom and myself, or the NFBC isn't for them.

Again, I'm still figuring out the rules, but this is an early look at the changes. Good luck in this final weekend of action and start planning for 2008 soon.

just a quick reminder about having the possibility of dual lineups locks on mondays (when there is an early game).

390 teams....and given we "only" had 195 teams in 2004 that represents doubling up in only five years. Nicely done. Wish my investments did so well.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Great Job, Greg!

I'll see if I can recruit a few local guys to up the ante and join the NFBC this off season.

Nothing compares to the NFBC...keep it up!

Nice set of changes. Glad to see the increase to 700 ip . I like the prize spreads, though I think 60 to first and 28% to second would be nice. It seems a little overly weighted to first place considering that many leagues are coming down to 1 or 2 points... But that is a minor thing...

thanks

Greg, you're inching your way up to 800 IP. Why not just go there and be done once and for all? :D

Greg - good start

I am going to side with those in favor of liberalizing the structure for the month of September. With rosters expanded and no need for Major League clubs to put a player on the DL, just eliminate having to have a list each week and change to unrestricted lineup setting on Monday AND Friday - just in September. This would allow the players to manage their teams better and make it easier for both you and Stats.

In terms of the IP requirement, I am always going to side with the lower number to allow people to manage teams their own way, so use 700 for everything.

I would like to suggest that you only be able to replace players who were put on the DL during THAT week. Right now it is possible to take advantage of the DL rule if your pitcher has, say, a tough start on Monday, but a great one on Saturday. You can just start a DL'd pitcher, skip the pitchers first start, and then put him in for his weekend start. I know some owners have done that this year, and I don't think its in the spirit of the rules (nothing against them at all- they saw a loophole and took advantage of it). So just word it so you can replace a player who was put on the DL between Monday and Thursday of that week. Thanks.

Some of you are already aware I'd rather see the DL rule tossed in the garbage completely, but at the least that loophole does need to be corrected. A big thank you for doing away with this "Sept. DL". It's way to much for a commissioner to be expected to do. It's inevitable he's going to miss a guy, or add a guy who ends up playing. As for "liberalizing" the Sept rule. Again, I say this is a weekly changes game. Leave it as such.

Was there any progress on forcing people who start a DLed player to force them to not be able to swing in a player mid week?

I am a big fan of the mid-week dl rule and hope that we can close the abuse of this rule for people who are swinging in/out pitchers for matchups...

greg, any word on the dual lineups locks on mondays (when there is an early game). for example, the cubs start at 1:05 on monday. all the other games start after 7:05pm on monday. i've noticed that it's very hard to obtain injury news prior to 1pm on monday (esp on west coast players), but usually a lot more news is available by 7pm.

having a 1pm lock time for any players in the 1:05 game AND a 7pm lock time for all other players could benefit a lot of owners by giving them extra time to set their lineups for the entire week. it sucks to find out later monday that your guy is hurt, but he is locked in for the week because of the early start time for ONE game. thanks for your consideration.

I'll ask STATS about that again. I did not get an answer when I asked in September, but with football winding down we should get this request back in the priority folder. It's a worthy request and would make the game better. I'll ask now.
