WHIP-lash

Post by Team Herron » Tue Oct 02, 2007 2:34 am

I needed somewhere to vent. I am suffering from WHIP-lash.

Las night, I had two leagues that were very affected by the outcome of event - the $1,250 NL Auction and the Ultimate Draft.

As of saturday Night, I was winning the NL auction. Sunday I was passed for the first time all-season in batting average and fell to 2nd, 1 point out of first. To make a long story short, A Gonzalez, Tulowitzki and Holliday outhit Blum, Hairston and Helton and I got back my point of BA.

When I reviewed the live stats, I won the league by a point. However under final stats - I am tied..why. Because my team finished .0003 behind the team trailing me in WHIP. live scoring had us tied (3 decimals). thus, me down a half point - him (Team Kraus) up a half point and we tie.

But wait - there is more. I was in 3rd lone Saturday night in the Ultimate, but again was passed on Sunday. I went into last night needing a half-point in the Ultimate to tie for third and a point to win 3rd out right ($7,500). I needed 2 RBI's from Holliday/Torrealba (on team Ferrari) to tie my opponent and 3RBI to move ahead. In the 13th inning, Holliday's triple is the third combined RBI. Live stats has me in 3rd alone.....but wait. the story is familiar. Peavy's shelling was just enough to drop his whip below my opponent. by how much, the same .0003!!!!

.0003 of WHIP cost me $10k between two leagues. that is the equivalent of 1/3 of an inning!!!!

OUCH

OUCH Anyone calls you a cry baby about that send them to ole Chest. That sucks man- sucks bad hopefully you lost to guys you actually like that makes it a bit easier.

Me I lost by half a point- would have tied with one more stolen base, would have won if a pretty inactive team got 2 more rbis. I have no major issues with it because I lost to a good guy and more importantly I honestly think his team was better and he did a better job than me. If I would have won it would have been bad luck on his behalf not great managing on mine.

In my best Geiko commercial Warren Wallace voice I just wish they could have said there goes Chest Rockwell 2 time nfbc main event league winner.

Best of luck to you in football Jessie hopefully the Gods will smile kindly on you and things will even out.

We were watching your teams for the last few weeks and everything was so close. But rest assured, it sure looked like a lot of the Las Vegas Auction Leagues and Ultimate Leagues came down to the final games. Unreal.

For the record, here's the WHIP total in that $1,250 NL Auction League:

Team Kraus 1.3863943

BaseballMafia.com - Herron 1.38643703

Imagine a hit or a walk during the course of the season deciding this league title. Unreal, isn't it? Great job guys and we'll have some beers together next year in Las Vegas. And great job to Ron Kraus in this league as well.

Wow, with a race that close I would be going back and double checking the numbers with an outside source! A few errors to hits rulings and thing flip flop

That is just nuts! whip lash is right!

That is just nuts! whip lash is right! In 2004 I saw somebody mention on the message boards that they had set up a 'shadow' league to their NFBC league on Yahoo. The last 3 years I've done this also. Registered for 15 Yahoo ids, signed up all 15 teams and entered the draft. The reason I do all 15 teams is I really like the Yahoo site to do my free agent analysis. I only keep my team current as to roster and lineup changes. Now I realize that Stats may have had some web site issues at times but I have never found a time where I've felt a need to question the accuracy of their statistics. They have always matched my Yahoo site.

Wow Terry, no wonder you win this thing!!! That is an amazing amount of effort. The best I do is enter the drafts into my spreadsheets but I don't do more than that.

Very glad to hear that there has been 100% accuracy of the hits/errors, etc... There is often changes on these and I would imagine there are mistakes. I have to wonder though one thing: does Yahoo use STATS as their service?
That's because stats provides the info to Yahoo also.

I'm glad no one made a huge deal about live stats not being carried out to more deci's than what are shown on live stats page.

When it came to era, whip, and BA, ties on live stats are not ties when carried out 99% of the time when carried out when results actually run on league standings pages.

Ive got this beat.

Going into the tiebreaker last night I was .5 points out of second. In order for me to claim second i needed either a Corpas W or 0-4 or 1-7 night from K. Greene.

After K Greene got a hit in his 2nd AB i focused my attention on rooting for either a tie game or a blown Corpas save so he can get the win. Well guess what I got my chance Corpas tossed 10 pitches in the 9th, however Col couldnt socre in the bottom of the inning for my W, and for a reason i will never know they decided to pull him.

then the unthinkable happended, Greene got his 7th AB and ended the night 1-7. All I needed was for Hoffman to come in and not allow 3 baserunners. We all know what happened and I was left with Third
Hey Kent,I know one guy that you like that you had no problem passing by in the last couple of days. ;) I was rooting for you to finish in the money. But,I had plans on being there also.I had hitting points locked up But,I was also frozen out with my poor pitching.Stuck right where I was.Last time I listen to Charlie Steiner when he says Chad Billingsley will not be in the starting rotation all year.

We all know what happened and I was left with Third It was even closer than that! Munchers could have pulled into a tie with us if Cammeron got a chance to steal 2nd when he pinch ran. What a crazy night. First I'm pulling for Matsui and Bard to drive in 2 runs and/or steal 2 bases to give us some breathing room. Then I'm pulling for Bell to mow down the Rockies in the bottom of the 9th. Soon after that I'm praying the guy at bat (forget who it was) to get a hit REAL SOON so Cammeron can't steal 2nd. Then I'm cheering for Greene to get a hit in the 13th. When that didn't happen, I turn into the biggest Rockie fan looking for at least a couple hits to get that whip point. Crazy night. And that was for 2nd place money. I can only imagine how Jesse felt.

Going into last nights game I was in second place in LV7, 1 point out of first. I needed Peavy (the first place teams pitcher) to get roughed up in whips, not get the win and strike out no more than six Rockies just to have a snowball's chance in hell to catch him. If Peavy pitches up to his standards I lose by 4 or 5 points based on what my opponent (Team Jaffe) stood to gain. By the time Peavy was removed in the 7th I was miraculously still in the hunt. When finally the bottom of the thirteenth arrived I had picked up a half point in batting average (as you know live stats doesn't go past the fourth power in the ratios) but thought I was still fractions behind the team I needed to catch to pick up the whole point. I needed my only active player, who was due up in the inning to get a hit, if it's a home run I pick up another half point and win. Unless mind you, Helton also gets a hit then I lose by half a point. So what happens? Tulowitztki gets his 4th hit of the game, Helton is intentionally walked and I end tied for first! Complaints? I've got no complaints! To borrow a Paul Simon lyric "I'm a consecrated boy". I tied for first, plus I'm writing this post from Boulder, Colorado. If anything, I'm complaining on behalf of Team Jaffe who's no doubt sticking pins in a Spartacus clay figurine at this very moment. Sometimes long shots pay out, GO ROCKIES!

I doubt if I was the only one to set up a Shadow Yahoo league in 2004 but I did it and posted as much on these boards. The reason was pretty much to have a second way to follow free agents as Stats was less efficient in that area back then. I kept it fairly accurate for a month or two. But I had to have all the yahoo teams updated by midnight Sunday. That got to too big a hassle for the purposes of verifying standings.
