NFBC Keeper League Anyone?

I know we've branched out over the years to include NFBC Satellite Leagues, NFBC Mid-Season Leagues and even NFBC Draft Champions Leagues, but I've been asked by a few folks if I'd be interested in hosting another type of league: A Keeper League. I've said no so far because those are just too tough to do and other services like UFS can do it better than me.

That being said, I have a strong feeling that there is a great group of owners here who would be interested in an NFBC-style Keeper League and who would participate every year. I think it's something worth considering at the $500-$1,000 level with payouts to the top three teams each year. I'd propose an online draft, 30 or 40 rounds depending on the depth you'd like to achieve with your teams, and a smaller keeper list in the 5-10 range.

That being said, others like Perry or UFS or KJ Duke are better at proposing this game plan than me. George Kleemann is the one who has been calling me each week for two years about this and I finally promised that I would push this early in the off-season. I know he's signup No. 1 as he splits a team with his wife, Sandi. But let's see the details first.

Draft keeper leagues can be done with teams keeping x amount of players each year and then holding the rest of the draft in March with everyone picking the rest of the players from the pool. It's easy to run that way.

However, let me propose this idea: In a football keeper league that Mike Fabiano ran a few years ago, we each kept 5 players at season's end and we then gave up the round we originally drafted that player in. We could keep that player for x amount of years and give up that round we drafted him in each year. So if I drafted Jose Reyes this year in Round 1 and wanted him as my keeper in 2009, I'd forfeit my first round pick in 2009. If I drafted Fausto Carmona in Round 20 this year and I choose to keep him after he wins the Cy Young I then give up by 20th round pick in 2009 and possibly beyond. There would be some strategy in the keepers you keep and value in the rounds you got them in. If we didn't put any time limit on the number of years you could keep your players, there'd be REAL value in finding sleepers early in their careers. Just an idea and another way to do this.

Anyway, I'll await the responses and see if there's enough interest for something like this. If there is, you can put your name down here and we'll figure out the rest later. But it could be another good side event that becomes something fun going forward. But it's something that hopefully you plan on doing for years and years and ......

Thanks all.

Greg,

This is something I would be interested in, depending on when / where / and what the final rules would be. I can't say for sure until I see what rules would be adopted, but I'll put my name out there as being interested.

Certainly interested. Like the idea of keeper leagues. Would favor a larger # of keepers than 5.

Definitely interested, would have to know all of the details before committing 100%.

I'd also love it if this were offered in an auction format. Perhaps both snake and auction versions would be possible?

No question I'd give an auction version a go.

No question I'd give an auction version a go. Greg, a keeper auction league would actually be easier to administer as you'd have +$5 fees each year going forward and you could even draft minor-leagues like we do in the XFL and have smaller keeper fees for them (+$3). I'd consider doing something like this, but I'd probably only do it as a live auction. If you can round up 15 guys to do this in Las Vegas, I'd probably consider it. Maybe we could squeeze it in on Saturday or Sunday night. Just a thought.

Not everyone would be in Vegas though. How about Fantasy Auctioneer if it is on line?

[/QUOTE]Greg & Greg - what if we used cannonball rules modified for a mixed auction league and did a phone hookup with new york?

Eight keepers, no trading, no salary escalation but 3-year contract limit, 30 man major lge roster plus 3 minor lgrs, etc.

Draft keeper lge could use the same rule set, just replacing keeper salaries with rounds as mentioned above.

The Cannonball rules look very good and is a great starting point for this keeper league format. I know you patterned this off the NFBC, so this is the place to start. Post those leagues here for all to see and we'll go from there. Sound good?

All interested - I started a signup list on the other thread after rules posting - please post there which you're interested in (draft or auction). Seems like a good chance we could get at least one of each going.
