Friday Vent Starts Now.

Post by Tom Kessenich » Fri May 07, 2004 8:16 am

I don't have much to vent about with my fantasy teams at the moment because, fortunately, I'm doing well so far. But I do have a few OT vents if nobody minds:

1. Why in the living h**l are there 4 days between games in the NBA playoffs? Seriously, how stupid is this to drag the season out so long? When do the Spurs and Lakers play again? Labor Day? Unbelievable.

2. I don't know about anybody else but I HATE that new Miller commerical about the President of beers. I can't find the mute button fast enough whenever that commerical comes on.

3. Can someone explain to me the fascination with the Olson twins? Seriously, I'm not getting that one at all. Yea I understand they have more money than Fort Knox, but where is the appeal here? Greg was kind enough to try and explain the Olson phenomenon to me (he claims to have all the knowledge because his kids watch their movies ... ok :D ) but I still don't get it.

4. I missed the Friends finale cuz I haven't watched the show in about a decade. Did Ross find the one-armed man who killed his wife?

That's all ... for now.

Hello all. Tom, I can probably do enough venting for both of us. Don't be surprised if you read about Mike Hampton having an unfortunate accident in the near future if he doesn't come around soon(yes Mike, that was a threat!). Same goes for you Redding, although I am guaranteeing he pitches a good game tonight since he is on my bench. CC Sabathia has already missed out on at least 3 wins that he should have had and now it appears he is going to come back down to earth. Oh yeah, a strikeout every now and then would not be turned away. OK, now it's time to start on Gardenhire and the Twins management. Just wanted to let you know that you have a kid at Rochester who is leading the world in power numbers. I'm only a stupid fantasy geek, but I would bet that he probably has a little more upside than Jose Offerman, Doug Minkevitz or Lecroy. I have benefited from Lew Ford, but they need him and Morneau in the lineup as far as I am concerned but I may be a little biased. On a good note though, the Jason Bay era on the Sooner Magic team starts next Monday.

Tom, as far as the Olson twins are concerned I am going to have say "no comment" until such time as they turn 18. You can bet I will have plenty to say at that point and time.

Sooner, your comments about the pitchers raises an interesting question: How long do you stick with good starters or solid ones if they are struggling? I've always been of the mind that I'll give a guy an extra start or two too many rather than pull the plug too soon although if you have good options on your bench, it certainly makes sense to get them active.

In my main league (NL-only), my pitching has been very strong so that's allowed me to keep Brian Lawrence (who's one of my lesser starters) active despite his poor performances so far. The main reasons I've kept him active are that I believe he's a solid pitcher who will turn things around and he's been getting some wins so he's been of some value despite his lofty ERA and WHIP. Well I've been playing with fire a bit with him but it certainly paid off with his gem this week. Now I just have to hope that's a sign of things to come.

Okay, here's my daily vent: Playing in six fantasy leagues can tear your heart out in so many different ways. Derrek Lee goes 5-for-5 with 5 RBIs and I move up two spots to fourth place in my old college league, now in its 17th year. But Mike Hampton (I feel your pain Sooner) gets lit up again to take down three other teams. Then I have Alex Gonzalez in just one league, but it's LABR and now I need to find a shortstop for the next 6-8 weeks. Having a lot of fantasy teams is fun, but it sure makes watching Baseball Tonight feel like you're on a ferris wheel.

Not a vent, just a thought. It's been fun to watch the progress made by some top minor-leaguers and anticipate when they will get called up to the majors. The Royals may be close to making a move, but most other clubs will likely wait before promoting their top prospects. Guys like Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera didn't get called up right away last year either and it will be interesting to see if any prospects make it big in 2004 after mid-season callups.

Greg, I don't know what to make of Hampton but he is going to have to throw at least a halfway decent game before he gets another shot in my lineup. He is looking more and more like a drop but I am not going to pull the trigger yet. As far as callups are concerned, I have a friend in Minneapolis who is telling me that the natives are getting very restless on Morneau. It will be interesting to see what happens.

One small vent to end the day and a question for Walla Walla: Is Edgar Martinez done? Man, those Mariners look slow and old and Edgar leads the way. I grabbed him late in several leagues because nobody wants to fill that utility role with a DH, but somehow Edgar puts up solid numbers each year. Maybe not this year, or am I wrong? I've replaced him in a couple of leagues because the at-bats just don't look the same as they did before. Is there any hope there?

Morneau is hitting .395-9-25 in 25 games at Triple-A Rochester, but the Twins don't want to call him up to DH. Why? I agree with you, that his time will come soon. Same with that top pitching prospect for the Royals, who could be called up soon as they are limiting his Triple-A outings so that he's fresh down the stretch this year.

I drafted that guy and can only hope he's up to his reputation as he's been on my bench all year.

The good part is the PT argument... the Royals need pitchers. They have a productive batting lineup - give him a shot ;)

Before I forget.. Tom K - you scare me...

1. They put 4 days in there for cash. Why compete against Survivor and Friends Finale when you can simply get more by waiting.

2. President of Beers - Every time they put on that commercial I drink a beer... it's part of their plan to sell more beer.

3. Olson Twins? Holy smokes - don't even TRY to explain anything admired by little girls. My 6 yr. old daughter came home sick from school 2 weeks ago. She faked a stomachache so they called me to come get her. She stuck with her story and played it all out all afternoon until later in the evening she came to me and told me that she wasn't really sick and that she had to fake it to come home because her pants got wet at recess since there were puddles in the school playground. I asked her why she wouldn't just call and ask me to bring her new pants instead of faking being sick. Her reply? "You wouldn't have brought me the cool pants"

She's grounded now until she turns 21. Do NOT try to make sense of it, you will hurt yourself.

Edgar Martinez has started off slow. I wouldn't give up on him though. When he gets going he'll still be hitting them. I think if he wanted he could hit line drives until he was 80.

I have Wilson Alvarez in both the auction lge and NFBC - he finally gets a start and throws a one hit shutout in 7 IP. But LA doesnt think he is good enough to be a starter - even though he has been their best (non-closer) pitcher since the break last season, among the best numbers in the lge - yet he is only a "spot" starter?

Yeah, use him a couple of innings a week while starting Lima and Weaver. Anyone want to explain to me what the hell Tracy is thinking?

Walla Walla, you are right. I just saw Edgar Martinez hit a two-run double and a two-run homer. I won't give up on him! :D
