NFBC CHAMPION PROFILE – KENT STERMON MAGAZINE LEAGUE 1

1. How did it feel to win your league title?

I won the champs league so that made it even sweeter. So many guys I respect to the fullest in that league – (Dan) Kenyon, Andy Nolan, Glenn Schroter, Eddie Gillis just to name a few. To win by 30 points in a very active league was even more gratifying. It also gave me confidence that I can play for the 100k because that team translated would have won. That is a dangerous comparison to make, but it is not like it was weak competition.

2. What were the keys to your championship season?

The keys were like any championship season.Do not screw up round one (Arod), have good pitching depth (Sabathia and Haren after round 6), find some studs on waivers (Braun, Carmona), find some cheap saves, and find value late (El Duque and Noah Lowry)

3. What draft day strategies worked best?

Every draft is different but I would say making sure your pitching is deep enough to withstand a full season.I would also say having a balanced team, balance goes beyond having all categories covered. It includes things like drafting a team balanced between solid performers and guys with high upside. Injury prone versus healthy guys etc.

4. Were there any draft day strategies that didn't pan out?

I debated between Russell Martin and AJ Pierzysnki.Remember this draft was very early and frankly I had not done my homework on Russell Martin. I also had a shot at Hanley Ramirez in round 2 but at that time was scared of his shoulder injury instead I drafted Vernon Wells.

5. How did FAAB work for you?

I did a terrible job with FAAB in the main event and could not have been happier with my performance in this league. I bid huge on Braun and won, found a gem in Carmona, found a couple of saves, and a solid 2nd catcher. I knew my team was pretty solid and I was very concerned with Conor Jackson at corner infield. I bid like 500 on Braun and got really lucky considering what he gave my team.

6. How long have you been playing fantasy baseball/fantasy sports?

I have been playing for about 10 years. I am the worst fantasy football player on the planet. I have finished last or 2nd to last in my home league for 4 straight years and I am in last this year.

7. Personal - single/married/occupation/where do you live?

I am married to a wonderful beautiful woman, and have a month old little girl. I am Chief Financial Officer of a transportation/logistics company in Jacksonville Florida.

Great year Kent, this team took off early and never looked back. The battle for 2nd was the only race in this league.I also agree this team would have been in the overall top 5.

An ass-whipping of monumental proportions. A helluva team, Kent.

And knowing you, another one is in the works for this year.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Congrats, Kent!

No doubt a killer wife to have lots of patience even while traveling (and pregnant to boot) and putting up with a couple drunken baseball fans! ;)

It will be cool seeing you in Vegas again!

You coming for the THU get together?

This league wasn't even close -- the biggest blowout of any NFBC league I've been a part of since 2004. The difference between 1st and 2nd place (130 to 101) was greater than the gap between 2nd and 10th (101 to 73).

Kent, congrats on a great win!

P.S. That was my runner-up bid ($318) for Braun when you got him for $435. Fantastic pickup!

Good job kent! I expect to see you back in the main event winner's circle this year.

From what I remember, you musta had some good in season management of you main event team to get 2nd in your league, because I saw some serious weaknesses on your roster after draft day.

Well done.
