So some dip sh.it politician or crybaby soccer mom group or some religious freaks felt the need to remove the "Devil" from Devil Ray...the actual nickname of the species of Manta Ray with the "horns" the team was named after and the logo prominately displayed that is local to Florida.

I guess THAT name change will really have a great impact on the worlds society, and really will help clean up retired old Tampa Bay Florida.

Yikes.

Here's my take on that brilliant PR move... :D

Lance, you might want to get your facts straight before you post. The change came from the organization....from no place else did it stem. The new regime wants to break free from the old system, ie: not winning....they think a new name, new look(Rays=sun=good thoughts), and eventually new stadium www.mlbfleecefactor.com/2007/11/29/devi ... adium/350/ will change the franchise.

If it were up to the community, the name would've been changed a long time ago since it really isn't a species of sting ray, but rather a nickname given to manta rays. Technically they should be called the manta rays if you want to go by what we have in the water down here.

Yeah Lance it's the religious right again. Get used to it.

Just ONCE I'd like to see a Sports interview start like this, you know:

-----

Interviewer: Wow, a no hitter! How'd you do it?

Pitcher: Full credit to my lord and saviour, Satan. I'm just the vessel. All credit to the Prince of Darkness. All praise Lucifer!

Interviewer: um, er...

Pitcher: Oh, come on. Last year I was 8-12 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Last Friday I didn't get out of the second ining. So I sold my soul. Beelzebub, who loves ya, Baby?

-----

That'd be refreshing. Wouldn't even have to be Satan. Thor. Nike. Whoever. Maybe if he said Nike, he'd pick up a bigger endorsement than whatever he'd lose.

Hey Lance,

Are you suggesting they change their name to the Johnsons? :D

You know you are desperate as an organization when you are hoping a name change will improve your record.

I'd guess you'd fall for any spin they spout out to give the reasoning to remove the "devil" from the name.

Even your "Manta Ray" is a freaking nickname, smart guy.

It's really a Manta birostris...but don't let the facts get in your way of fighting the good fight! :D

The change to RAYS is pure genius. Think of all the marketing possibilities. Ray Kroc night - free fries at TB McDonalds. Ray Charles night - free pair of sunglasses. RAINMAN night -free umbrellas. Rachael Ray night - free Dunkin donuts coffee(small of course). "Orginal Rays" pizza night - winner eats pizza in the clubhouse with original rays Paul Sorrento and Jim Mecir. Future TB Bucaneer Ray Rice bobble head night. Best Buy 10% off Blu-ray disk player night. Ray Bradbury donate a book night. Ray-Ban sunglass give-a-way day. A Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns exhibition fight. Run the bases with Johnny Ray night. Shoot hoops with Ray Allen night.

Winners. All of them. Genius!

Next up, the Toronto Jays. It actually makes a lot of sense, as they got rid of the word "Blue" from their uniforms quite some time ago.

The real problem will be when the Red Sox and the White Sox both become The Sox. Perhaps that will be the impetus for at least one of the teams to finally spell the word "Socks" correctly.

The Athletics team name has outlasted three cities and been outdated for more years than one can count. Maybe with the move to Fremont they can come up with a new name.

Maybe they could be the Fremont Freeloaders, or the Beane ballers, the Moneyball maulers, Constant rebuilders, Stadium could be Eric Chavez revene, or the even bigger "A's" in Fremont.

The majority of the community could care less about the Devil Rays. The only comments ever made regarding the nickname pertained to what I said earlier.... they aren't called Devil Rays in the area....everyone actually just says, "sting ray".

The new regime wants a change, heck they contemplated changing to "The Tarpons", which was originally considered . If anything is worthy of an  , it's that nickname.

BTW, saying it's a Manta birostris is comparable to you being a sportsbettinghomosapien  .

Patrick I have been to around 25 parks and that place is right in my backyard and never go- I sure do hope they build that new stadium where AL Lang is- which is one of my favorite places to see a spring game because of the small crowds..

But techically it's true..."Lion", "Man", "Zebra" etc are just shortened nicknames.

If that's you in the NFBC Mag...Patrick Welsh...you look like a good guy, and I trust Kent. I'll settle down.

FYI ... the Atlantic Devil Ray is often confused with its larger family member, Manta birostris (Manta Ray). A "Manta Ray" is but one type in the family of devil rays (aka Mobulidae). Also, Manta's can not be called stingrays, since they in particular do not have stingers.

So depending, the team could be called either the Tampa Bay Atlantic Devil Rays, or the Tampa Bay Mobulidae (but not the Manta Rays). I vote for Mobulidae.

Watching the MLB package, I am always struck on how quiet it is at that ballpark. I picture Retirees napping while listening to Milo Hamilton. Sometimes the only thing heard is that leather-lunged guy yelling at opposing players. Same way at the ballpark?

[/QUOTE]Kent, I've been with same woman for over 12 years now so I definitely know how to bicker with someone, only to act as if it never happened the next day . And yes, Lance would have to drink the beers for me, I gave that up about a decade ago....now if only I could get rid of a few other habits  .

A new stadium would be great, but not where they are proposing it. Could you imagine the nightmare when folks try to leave the games, if it is built on Al Lang? The parking is horrible down there and there's only a few ways in and out of the area. In principle it seems feasible, but I forsee a lot of headaches.

I'm going to head to the aquarium, myself, so I can get to the bottom of this Unsolved Mystery.

They actually gave him season tickets, due to his enthusiasm. He usually picks one guy, per game, and finds out whatever he can about the guy and then heckles him the whole game.

Yep, the lack of support shows at the games. It is very quiet compared to other places. I have a few frineds from N.Y. who are diehard Yankee fans....they attend the games and get reprimanded by the elderly due to them cheering and yelling at the players. People act as if there is something wrong with you if you are vocal or cheer at "the wrong time" . I'm not a very vocal fan, but it would be nice to able to do more than a golf clap.
