KDS vs Bidding for Slots

Post by bluenose » Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:39 am

I know Greg and Tom put a lot of effort into promoting KDS as one of the NFBC's unique tweaks, and KDS is clearly better than a random draw.

That said, the Keeper League that KJ Duke has organized under the NFBC umbrella uses FAAB bidding to assign slots, and IMO this is a further quantum leap forward. This lets you not only qualify the spots you want to draft out of, but quantify your preferences by staking your FAAB on it. Just as KDS gives owners far more control than random draws, this gives owners far more control than KDS.

I hope it's something that Greg and Tom wil consider implementing in more leagues down the track. This would seem, to me, to be even more important in football than in bases.

Corona is nasty. I don't know what I think of bidding for draft slots in fantasy baseball...

BBDS is a great method for individual leagues where all of the owners are competing for that one prize. But when you are running an overall contest where BBDS could change the starting point for every single league, then I'm not in favor of it. In other words, with BBDS in football, it's possible that many teams could bid their entire FAAB for a top draft spot. One could bid $1,000 for spot 1, another could bid $900 for spot 2, etc. Now in another league, maybe someone gets the No. 1 spot for $111 and then still has enough FAAB to add key free agents and really stack his team for the Championship Round.

I know that FAAB also allows others to spend all their money in Week 1 for a top free agent, but I still think it's much different. To me, I want all 26 leagues starting at the same spot to start the season. Again, that being said, for private leagues where all of the owners want to use BBDS, I'm all for it.

And KoQ - right on bro

In a perfect world (2009?...c'mon Stats programmers!!!)...

LIVE bidding for free agents!!!

Make it simple!

Bid for player A is currently 96.

You have a "blind" bid in for 180. (you get him for 97..."You are current lead bid!")

Someone bids 151 (like the rum).

He is informed "You are NOT the current lead bid"

Your bid now is at 152, and you are still the lead bid.

This goes on until the end of the bidding time frame.

Maybe have a final bidding time frame to even the playing of different speed connections. "Final bids in by 5:00pm est"

Max out the one dollar "feeler bids" to 3 in a row...then automatic bid increments go to 5 per bid (to discourage snipers.)

Just thinking out loud.

Blind bidding sucks. (But it's all we have at the moment.)

It's not a matter of technology Lance that is preventing your free agent idea from happening. I trust STATS or anyone else could devise such a system. It's the fact that owners would then have to be live each Sunday night to actually bid for free agents. Even if they just put in blind bids, there is a greater chance that they won't get a player if someone else is there willing to bid higher. It makes this almost a fulltime job rather than a hobby.

Greater involvement and greater innovation is great for some, but I'm not sure it's great for the masses. Maybe one day I'll have to create a league like you say and see how many folks would enjoy such a format.

Or as Terry Haney says, create a league with daily transactions and see how many signups we'd get. Again, for some folks more is better. For others, more is less.

True.

Speaking of daily transactions...my local auction league just sent us an e-mail saying that's what we'll be doing this season.

I'm not thrilled...but it should allow recovery stats from injuries a bit (I guess).

Here's the news...(I agree about Bud)

"Hope everyone had a great offseason and is ready for another year of fantasy baseball....Looks like there will be a couple of games in Japan again this year(Bud really knows how to keep baseball Americas pastime by starting the season overseas). Would rather let those 2 games go and have the draft on March 29th. Talked to some owners and there might be a problem with every week in March. If we do go with the 29th we might have to start a bit later then usual but I will keep everyone posted. With no keepers it might already be a late night but last year was surprisely quick, so you never know. Looks like all 12 teams will be back. Calls will be eliminated this year and I have come up with a few things that a handful of owners have been in favor of.250 dollars will still be the entry fee.

All teams will have full access to their own teams

Keep free agent moves to 2 a week(Monday thru Sunday)

I will track the moves per week

4 Bench spots and 2 DL (Same rules with the dl, extra free agent move per player placed on the dl)

Daily moves....Which I like...We will able to change our line-ups everyday. This will help if a player is placed on the dl on Tuesday or a player is day to day, you can swap them for one of your bench players or free agent pick-ups. I will max each hitting position to 162 games which you will be able to track during the year. So if you have a player off on a Thursday and a bench player playing you can put that player in for that day but you will have to make sure you don't max out your position before the end of the year.Pitching will also be the same and I will come up with a maximum innings pitched before I set up the league. So if you have a pitcher on your bench that you want to throw into a start you will be able to do so. Thought about setting up a weekly league but I think this would work better for everyone. If anyone has any questions or concerns just e-mail me. Thanks Dave "

it's broken randomly. if u don't like that answer, go read up on how tied nfbc free agent bids are decided. to be honest, the random method is better.
