I must admit, it was fun to get back into the Draft Room last night. After almost five months of working on rankings and Cheat Sheets and Top 250's, it was good to see people plunking down some cold hard cash and deciding where players should be drafted. What a fun night of action it was for 45 drafters last night.



While I don't want to give away any individual league results, I thought it would be fun to look at some interesting trends from last night to keep the discussions going until the next round of satellite leagues next week. We have at least 6 full satellite leagues for next week and we've added another day of action on Thursday, Feb. 28th.



While looking at the drafts from last night, here are some interesting tidbits I found:



* A-Rod went No. 1 in all three drafts.

* Hanley Ramirez went 2nd in two drafts and 4th in the other.

* David Wright went 2,3,3.

* Jimmy Rollins went 4,5,5.

* Jose Reyes went 3,4,6.

* Miguel Caberera went 7,7,13.

* Johan Santana went 9,9,15

* Albert Pujols went 10,12,16

* One team at the first turn got Santana and Pujols.

* Ryan Braun went 11,12,14

* Jake Peavy went 17,22,22

* Victor Martinez went 27,25,25

* Russell Martin went 19,29, 33

* One No. 1 pick got A-Rod and Vlad

* Erik Bedard went 31,37,40

* Jonathan Papelbon went 32,49,40



How's that for a start? If you have specific questions, I'll try to answer them without giving away any individual league results. But it's fun to talk about actual draft results again. Greg,

The biggest trend many people noticed in the two magazine drafts was closers going later than every before. Without giving away specific drafts, did that trend continue last night?

Many people have been saying for years that closers are overvalued, but they continue to go high anyways......is this the year things finally change?

10 starters taken, 1 RP in Top 65 picks

17 starters taken, 4 RPs in Top 80 picks

14 starters taken, 3 RPs in Top 84 picks



Does that explain things?



There really weren't any major RP runs last night, but you saw them going in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds. Seems much lower than last year.

~Lance When Pujols told reporters this off-season that he would opt for elbow surgery instead of play through the same pain this year, he went from Top 5 to Top 15. It will be interesting to track his draft standing as folks see him hit this spring. Could he bounce back up or drop further? He's the interesting one in the first round, along with Hanley's shoulder.

A lot of Pujols overreaction.

He said the same thing about his foot a couple of years ago, he likes the public to know that he's a battler. Somebody predicted early on that Santana and Pujols would be taken by the same team in the Main and they could be right. Quite a bargain.

Only a bargain though if Pujols does not shut it down at some point. He is also apt to get pitched around ALOT even if he is 100 percent healthy.

True, but he was pitched around last year and had a crummy lineup around him, what's new? Bottom line, his numbers are first round.

Maybe the end of the first round. Either way, im sure it will be a spirited debate right up until draft day.

Reminds me a lot of ARod dropping last year. You're right, it should be a good debate.

Greg, how about a couple of closers in new-ish situations, George Sherrill and Brandon Lyon?

I know last year C Beltran was the overall #9 pick. I was happy to get him at #28. R2P13. To this point his ADP has been 18 in the mocks.

I agree about Beltran. I came away with Braun/Beltran/Manny with my first three picks. Thought that was a great way to start.

I felt a closer run last night. 9 closers in 26 picks from the end of R5 to beginning of R7

Suprised to see Vlad go as high as 14 and as low as 28. I figured he would end up somewhere in the middle of that range, but not that high or low.

Pujols has played his entire career with aches and pains, and ALWAYS (with the exception of the 1st half of last season) produced huge numbers. He'll make it work again in 2008.

perhaps this could explain Beltran's drop:

Carlos Beltran doesn't expect to play in the first few exhibition games next month as he continues his recovery from knee surgeries.

"I’m not where I want to be," Beltran said. "The test won’t come until I run the bases."



If he doesn't steal 20-ish bags, and with his constant injuries, he loses some luster.
