Who Will Be First To Win 2nd National Title?

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Feb 21, 2008 5:29 am

This year we have three former NFBC grand champions coming back for the main event to try and become the first person to win TWO NFBC overall titles. We also have two of our NFFC overall champions in the NFBC this year and they have the potential to become the first multi-sport national champion. We do not have any former WCOFF champs in our contest or they too would have the chance to claim that title.

So here's the lineup for the first two-time national fantasy sports champion, just for fun (and a long thread), mind you: ;)

Artie Rastelli (2004 NFBC champion)

David DiDonato (2006 NFBC champion)

Terry Haney (2007 NFBC champion)

Mark Srebro (2004 NFFC champion)

Ryan Welch (2007 NFFC champion)

I know it's extremely difficult to ever win one of these, but do you think it's possible to ever win two of these? What would it take for that to happen? What type of publicity would come to this owner's way if they were able to accomplish such a feat?

With 390 teams expected in the main event, it will be tough for anyone to win the overall title. Good luck to all and let the trash talking begin on who you think will win it all this year. ;)

I just think it's odd that more past winners aren't still playing every year... I know I would/will be!

Crossing over from football is a "newer" development.

Great question Greg a few thoughts:

1) We don't know if Ryan knows anything about fantasy baseball - especially at the NFBC level

2) Geeko has made huge strides since "finding" baseball at the upper level, so his NFFC crown and Overall NFBC finish last year have to give him some edge.

3) Of the five you list I would rank them

David DiDonato (2006 NFBC champion)

Terry Haney (2007 NFBC champion)

Mark Srebro (2004 NFFC champion)

Artie Rastelli (2004 NFBC champion)

Ryan Welch (2007 NFFC champion)

4) But if someone posted odds, I would take Shawn Childs over all of them - he has been close in baseball and has a better overall track record (I think) and dramatically improved in NFFC last season.

None. I say check back in 20+ years.

In my opinion, there are too many quality players in both sports to have a repeat champion. Just think about how many exceptional fantasy players we know in each sport who have NOT won a title. Then consider that every year another big batch of good fantasy players are added into the equation in each sport.

Even a marginal player in the right spot can have a fantastic draft and pull off a title, especially in football.

Even a marginal player in the right spot can have a fantastic draft and pull off a title, especially in football. I think this is the consensus answer, which is why I bring this up. For someone to be able to pull this off would be something special and SHOULD garner national publicity. Mark won a football title against 224 players and finished fifth overall in baseball against 375 players. Pretty impressive. Shawn Childs has finished 3rd, 5th and 3rd overall in three NFBC seasons while winning three league titles in four years, which may be the most impressive performance to date in high-stakes fantasy sports. WCOFF hasn't had a repeat champion either, which shows you how tough it is to do.

I'm bringing it up because if someone DOES this during the next 20 years, it will be pretty amazing. Good luck to all.

Being from the New England area, rumors of CHILDS video taping some of his leaguemates draft preps the night before the Main Event may start to tarnish his reputation.

Hopefully, no tape surfaces. ;)

IMO, I think getting the football title is harder. Baseball requires much more knowledge and application of it to manage and win. Football has much more of a luck factor.

So, I think Gekko has the harder of the two titles in his column. With the amount of effort he is putting into baseball, he probably has the best shot of anyone.

Hopefully, no tape surfaces. ;) If anybody taped the prep work the night before the NFFC drafts last year in Las Vegas then we're all in trouble. :D The Fishers guaranteed me no cameras would be allowed at that party!! :D As for the NFBC preps on Friday, Childs is too busy doing the NL-only and AL-only auctions to videotape anyone. This guy doesn't just compete in the main event, he does the NFBC Quadfecta every year and seems to cash in all of them.

No BS...the league I run has like 4 ringers of 12, yet we all only have ONE title each in the 7 years of my league.

7 years...7 different winners...and that with 90% the same players each season!

As far as Srebro having a shot in baseball...he's got to show he can pass those top dogs like Childs and Kenyon. (Who are also chomping at the bit to add a Championship title to their resume.) (Mark has played all 4 years!)

I do agree that baseball is more "winnable" due to less injury and less luck and more games played...I also feel it is the game that has more "grandmasters" ...football has some great players...but nothing like a guy or gal finishing top 5 or 10 overall 3 times. (I don't think?)

Grandmaster Childs...3rd, 5th, 3rd (in 4 years)

Grandmaster Kenyon...2nd, 4th (in 3 years) (and not to forget he lost his 3rd place to Childs due to that ADD-ON game!!!)

Grandmaster Nolan...(4 years straight being in top 31, with a 3rd)

Grandmaster Haney...(Championship and a 4th in 4 years)
