Weekly Prizes
Just a note that we have not secured a sponsor yet for the NFBC Weekly Prizes. We obviously are still trying to secure a sponsor, but at this point we don't have a list of prizes yet. With any luck, we'll have something by the end of the week as one of our industry partners is interested.
Upper Deck Authenticated has been a great sponsor of the weekly prizes in the past, but they are unable to participate this baseball season. They are interested in the NFFC this football season, but baseball doesn't work in their plans right now.
Hang tight with us on this one and we'll have something for you soon. Good luck to all in Week 1 and may the winner enjoy their prize, whatever it may be!!

The 1st week prize should be an autographed picture of Tom Kessenich and Greg Ambrosius holding up the 2008 NFBC Championship trophy for someone to proudly display on wall!

Greg, I am sure you have lots of connections, which made me think of a few autographed balls I have received fro Steiner Sports Memorabilia.
I am not too familiar with memorabilia companies. Are they reputable? I began collecting baseball things. Any suggestions on who to look into purchasing from?
Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, Steiner is extremely reputable and they have exclusive deals with many Yankees' players, Giants', Mets, Red Sox, etc. Their items are authentic as they bring the players into their offices and do mass signings. In fact, we are talking with Steiner now about being a sponsor of our Weekly NFBC Contest and we should have an answer later this week.

Thank you! Only issue with Steiner is they are pretty expensive- but I have found they will negotiate. If you are just getting started I would certainly recommend going to a lot of shows.Find good information on who signs via the mail- you would be shocked how many do especially for a donation to their charity. No better place to rack up than spring training games and catching guys getting out at the cab stand coming in to a park.
If you are like most people you will end up being more in to what you get signed yourself rather than bought.
Couple of tips on buying- avoid EBay, as always if it is too good to be true it is for a reason, do good research for example a Hank Aaron signature will almost always be "thick" b/c he pushes so hard with the pen or a Mcgwire sweet spotted ball should always be looked upon with distrust. Avoid any dealer who says he can get you anything quickly. Most dealers are regionalized (exceptions you pay extra for like Steiner) so try to find a couple you trust to avoid their markup of buying from other dealers.
Last thought I assume you know things like always blue ink on a baseball, always sweet spot, single sig balls are generally better, official MLB baseballs only etc.
If I can do anything to help you get started with the hobby let me know.

So far my girlfriend has gotten me one for Christmas or birthday each year. I am a Dodgers fan, so I got Gibson and Hershiser. I also got Billingsley. Last year, I got a Tony Gwynn ball, which was nice as we took a trip to San Diego.
There is a store in our mall - overpriced and mostly local (Yankees, Mets, Phillies)
How do I find out about upcoming shows? And how do I know the guy isn't selling a ball/card/bat he signed?
I appreciate your time and the suggestion to contact people and donate to their charity.
Thank you!

Gwynn has a great sig and is a hell of a nice guy and a great signer.
With you not having some people and you live in NY area right you can go to shows and get whomever the show is featuring. It is generally the same guys pretty much over and over but with you being new to collecting you will want to get them.
Those Fields of Dreams stores generally charge about 100% more than they should.

I, too, have a small collection. About a half a dozen autographs on 8x10's that I WATCHED the great sign (Phil Neikro, Eddie Mathews, Warren Spahn, Ozzie Smith, and even...Pete Rose!). I have a few other things given as gifts (Aaron baseball, Yogi Berra baseball, Mantle autograph). Stopped when the kids came along and I couldn't afford the time to go to the shows, but this puts me in mind to start again.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Chest - I appreciate all of the info. I am definitely a novice. I just have a couple balls.
Thank you!
start with www
hotsignings.you know what
Gwynn has a great sig and is a hell of a nice guy and a great signer.
With you not having some people and you live in NY area right you can go to shows and get whomever the show is featuring. It is generally the same guys pretty much over and over but with you being new to collecting you will want to get them.
Those Fields of Dreams stores generally charge about 100% more than they should.
Thanks Chest, I'll check it out and let you know how it goes. I appreciate the help...even if you did leaugh at me for saying Hanley Ramirez would be awful last year!

I didn't listen then, guess I should now!

don't forget that too I remember! Crystal ball saw that hand injury coming...
Kidding, was off with both, Still had Utley in top 20, Ramirez though I was WAY off. It happens.
Just like in the FAAB, I put down 400+ on Pagan, after Cust went so high...wasted, but did learn from it - hopefully

It's a real nice start. Some HOF'ers...
I don't have kids yet, but am getting married Sept '09, so imagine they will be coming soon after...will need to get some things first, I guess, just in time to decorate my office, which will become the kid's room...little f#@%ers!!!
Just kidding, they can have the room, but it will be filled with baseball memorabilia...and he OR she will be a Dodgers fan - NO CHOICE ON THAT ONE

Just remember, once the kids arrive, you will only have one room in the house where you can be by yourself for a while. Just take the sports page into the can and NO ONE will bother Dad in there. Guaranteed! I installed a small fridge in mine to keep the beer stocked...

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Yall will like this:Years ago while Arod was just starting out in the minors.I was on my way home from work when over the radio I heard Jose Canseco and Arod were at a local card shop signing autographs for charity.Canseco 10 bucks each Arod for a dollar.Well, they hade a line of people getting a Jose auto, some with a whole box of balls to sign.Arod was just sitting next to him rarely getting asked.I paid a dollar had him sign a ball, and he thanked me.
I have hundreds of signed 8-10's and baseballs.I used to have all the best in my tv room and I thought it looked pretty cool. One day I came home and they were all boxed up in the closet.Wife said she was going to make a den for me and it would look real nice.It has been a few years now.I hope it is done real soon.
