Russel Wyatt isn’t about to start spending the $100,000 just yet. He knows there is still a long ways to go in the baseball season.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to enjoy a standout week which saw his Navel Lint team in Chicago League 1 top the NFBC field last week with 3,424 points.

Big weeks form Hanley Ramirez (.393-2-6), Willy Taveras (.381, 3 SBs), Chipper Jones (.391-1-5) and Coco Crisp (.429, 2 SBs) led the way offensively. Greg Maddux and Javier Vazquez each won twice while Vazquez fanned 17 to lead the pitching. Jason Isringhausen and Kevin Gregg each picked up a pair of saves.

“Being first for one week doesn't mean much in the overall game, but being a rookie in this event and knowing the high level of competition I am playing against it does feel good to be first at some point in the year,” Wyatt said.

“There's a lot of luck to get the most points but I did have a solid overall week. My pitching carried the team with 9 wins and a low ERA and WHiP. Javier Vazquez and Greg Maddux led the way along with Isringhausen's one win and two saves.

“Almost everyone on my offense contributed something. If they didn't hit for average they still scored runs or had a few RBI's. Putting Aubrey Huff in the lineup helped with his .269-1-5-1-6 line. Hanley Ramirez and Chipper Jones led the way with great weeks.”

Wyatt knew that since this first foray into the NFBC he had to be well prepared. So in addition to his regular pre-draft prep work he also took part in a pair of satellite leagues and those drafts proved extremely beneficial.

“Both drafts allowed me to put to test my ideas for creating a solid all-around team,” he said. “I don't think that there is any number of mock drafts that can be done that will replace drafting against 14 other people with money at stake.

“My preparation came from knowing the player pool. I have played fantasy baseball for 15 years and have been a baseball fan for 35 years. I have never known the players as well as I do this season. Of course my main source of information was Fantasy Sports magazine and the Baseball Forecaster, both of which I read cover to cover.

“Other than Hanley Ramirez with the third pick, I did not target many particular players. I set targets for each stat category and did my best to hit the goals with each pick. During rounds 10-20 I passed on some of my best available picks to get players that meet my needs.”

Russel is married with three daughters and lives in Oswego, IL. He has been an air traffic controller for nearly 20 years and is a self-proclaimed lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
